A method and system for providing security for a computing device include resolving, conflicts between a password-protected screen saver and communication notification capabilities by selectively enabling access to specific communications when the computing device is in a locked mode. The screen saver of the computing device is configured to switch the device from a normal operative mode to a locked mode in response to detection of a preset condition, such as the expiration of an idle-time timer. The computing device then remains in the locked mode until a preset authorization condition is recognized, e.g., entering a password. However, with the computing device in the locked mode, a subset of communication access capabilities is enabled. Specifically, notification of incoming communications is enabled. Preferably, connectivity for select types of outgoing calls is also enabled, e.g., connectivity for emergency calls. In the preferred embodiment, the conflicts are resolved by integrating the screen saver with communication access capabilities in a single software package. Also in the preferred embodiment, the communication access capabilities are provided by a telephony over LAN application and a switch to the locked mode is disabled during communication sessions involving the computing device.

The scheduler (60) enables selective retrieval and display of the appointments and events for any selected time period. The system is coupled to interfaces (24-30) allowing the schedule information to be transmitted as audio information, video information, or e-mail information. The scheduler (60) can compare the schedules to one another to automatically generate common meeting times. The common meeting time can then be transmitted to the various attendees using e-mail, audible instructions or voice mail.

A MCUC 105 according to an embodiment of the invention maintains a database of all the MCUs 104 in the system, a measure of processing coding resources, and a geographical location. When two parties seek to add a third in a conference call, the MCUC 105 determines coding resources, geographical locations, and determines the most appropriate mixing location based on preferences, such as network cost or endpoint coding resources or quality. The MCUC 105 then instructs the MCUs 104 to handle the conference accordingly.

A method and a system for handling calls includes utilizing a delay calculation module 12 to calculate 42 and 46 a transmission delay between first 18 and second 36 terminals over a voice-over-data-network 20, such as the Internet. A local call processor 10 determines 44 and 48 if the transmission delay exceeds a predetermined threshold. If the threshold is exceeded, voice transmission quality over the Internet is not sufficient to support high quality transmissions for the call and a call router places 60 the call over an alternate network, such as a Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) 22. In a preferred embodiment, the transmission delay calculation is a two-tiered process in which a preliminary round trip delay is first calculated to screen for large transmission delays which do not include a delay component introduced by a remote call processor. If the preliminary round trip delay exceeds a round trip delay threshold, the call is routed over the PSTN. If the preliminary round trip delay falls within a predetermined range below the threshold, the delay calculation module calculates an end-to-end echo which includes a delay introduced by the remote call processor. If the end-to-end echo is below an end-to-end echo delay, the call is routed 50 over the Internet. Otherwise, the call is routed over the PSTN. After a call is routed over the Internet, the round trip delay and the end-to-end echo are monitored 52 and the call is transferred 54 if either the round trip delay or the end-to-end echo exceeds its respective threshold.

In such a system, the terminal user or subscriber may click on a "Guest" button 3013 on the ToL client GUI screen before leaving the computer. The ToL guest user may then execute the call normally. According to a first embodiment of the invention, the ToL client locks the user into the ToL client screen. Keystrokes and mouse cursor movements which would allow exiting the ToL client are prevented. According to a second embodiment, of the invention, the ToL client screen is "maximized" and the minimize or resize window functions are blocked. When the terminal subscriber returns, a password is entered to regain full access to the computer.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, a caller may record her identification prior to making a telephone call. The recorded identification would be sent along with each call the caller makes. The caller's recorded identification would be received by the receiver and announced to the receiver. The caller may also record an image to be sent along with her calls that the receiver of her call may see her recorded image displayed when her call is being announced. Accordingly, an embodiment of the present invention allows identification of first-time callers and infrequent callers without the need for the call receiver to pre-record the caller's identity.

A system and method for silent Automatic Call Distributor (ACD) call monitoring in a telephony over LAN environment includes an ACD agent terminal (10) for handling incoming calls from customers. A first call (15) between the agent terminal and a customer terminal (14) includes agent voice data (16) and customer voice data (18). After the agent terminal has set up (46 and 64) the first call with the customer terminal, the agent terminal receives (48 and 66) a monitoring call setup request (22) from a supervisor terminal (12). In response to the call setup request, the agent terminal cooperates with the supervisor terminal to establish (50 and 68) a monitoring call over which the agent terminal transmits the agent voice data and the customer voice data to the supervisor terminal. The agent terminal monitors (56 and 76) the first call for simultaneously transmitted agent voice data and customer voice data. In order to minimize transmission delay in the monitoring call, the agent and customer voice data which was simultaneously transmitted in the first call is reformatted for transmission in the monitoring call. In a preferred embodiment, agent voice data bytes are multiplexed (60) with customer voice data bytes in a consecutively sequential manner and the resulting combination voice data packets are transmitted (62) over the monitoring call. In a second embodiment, the framing of voice data packets in the customer and agent voice data streams is shifted (80) prior to alternately transmitting (82) customer and agent voice data packets over the monitoring call.
