A novel technique for improving L-cysteine-producing ability of bacteria is developed to provide a method for producing L-cysteine, a related substance thereof, or a mixture thereof. L-cysteine, a related substance thereof, or a mixture thereof is produced by culturing a bacterium belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae, which has L-cysteine-producing ability and is modified so that expression of gene(s) selected from the group consisting of the ygaZH genes and the ychE gene is increased compared with a non-modified strain, in a medium, and collecting L-cysteine, a related substance thereof, or a mixture thereof from the medium.

The present invention can provide a nutrition composition useful for patients with renal diseases, which has an effective prophylactic or improving effect for various symptoms of malnutrition, inflammation, arteriosclerosis, abnormal lipid metabolism and oxidative stress, associated with renal diseases, or for diabetic nephropathy. The nutrition composition of the present invention contains one or more kinds of free amino acids selected from the group consisting of valine, leucine, isoleucine and histidine, and a lipid comprising É-3 fatty acid and É-6 fatty acid at a weight ratio (É-6 fatty acid to É-3 fatty acid) of 0.5 - 5.5. In addition, the composition further contains a soybean protein or a hydrolysate thereof together with the aforementioned lipid or instead of the aforementioned lipid.

By administering sterilized bacterial cells obtained by heat treating cells of a coryneform bacterium or an enterobacterium under a condition of pH 2 to 5 at 90 to 120°C for 3 minutes to 4 hours, or a feed containing such sterilized bacterial cells to a mammal, fowl, fish, or crustacean, immunity of these animals is enhanced.
