Disclosed are mixed halocarbon blowing agents comprising (1) halocarbons boiling below 10°C, (2) halocarbons boiling between 20°C and 35°C, and (3) inert organic liquids having a boiling point of from 35°C to 125°C. Also disclosed are blends of the above mixed blowing agents with active hydrogen-containing compounds, particularly polyols and the rigid closed cell foams prepared from such blends. Up to 60 percent reduction in hard halocarbons is realized with the mixed blowing agents.

A co-thermoforming process for forming thermoplastic foam sheet of low density and small cell size. The sheet is formed from multiple webs of thinner gauge polystyrene foam which permits improved control of cell size and resultant functionality of product thermoformed from the sheet. Adhesion of the webs is achieved in the thermoforming process. The co-thermoformed products have improved ductility and surface characteristics.

A probe (15) for quantitative detection of the concentration of an analyte in a sample (12) includes a hollow elongated body (14) adapted for single ended contact with the sample. The body (14) has at least one optical fiber extended through the body (14) for transmitting modulated light (26) through the body (14), out a window at the forward end of the body (14), and along an optical axis (25) into the sample (12) to optically excite the analyte. A pressure transducer (34) mounted beyond the window and spaced laterally away from the optical axis (25) detects an acoustic response of the analyte to the modulated light. This probe is particularly suitable for performing remote photoacoustic analysis of analyte concentration in a sample.

Compounds meeting these criteria are referred to as compounds of Formula (2). In addition to methods of analysis and computer systems therefor, the invention includes a method of chelating a metal ion to form a chelate and biodegrading the chelate comprising step (a) contacting the metal ion with at least one compound of Formula (2) to form a chelate and (b) contacting the resultant chelate or chelant with microbes of the type specified in ASTM 2667-89, ISO 5815 or effective enzymes thereof under conditions and for a time sufficient for biodegradation wherein either (i) the chelate formed in step (a) is formed in a process of removing deposits, scale, or rust; cleaning or washing; controlling metal initiated or catalyzed oxidation or deterioration including spoilage, discoloration, or rancidification; textile treatment; paper making; stabilization of polymers or phosphates; or petroleum drilling, production or recovery; or (ii) the chelate formed in step (a) is before step (b) used as a redox catalyst, in a process of photographic bleaching, bleach-fixing or developing; in electroless deposition or plating; in removing acid or oxide gases including H¿2?S, NOx, SOx, CO and CO2; or in providing agricultural nutrients.

A method of processing aluminum nitride powder in water such that the aluminum nitride exhibits a reduced tendency for hydrolysis comprises forming an aqueous admixture. The admixture includes (a) a liquid medium containing water, (b) aluminum nitride powder, and (c) a combination of buffering agents that includes a weak acid and a conjugate base of the weak acid and controls pH of the water within a range of from » 5.5 to « 7.0. The combination of buffering agents is employed at a lower weight percent concentration than that of the aluminum nitride powder. The combination of buffering agents and the liquid medium suitably form a solution into which the aluminum nitride powder is admixed. The resultant powder is also disclosed.
