The movable manufacturing facility (100) brings standard size home building comprehensively within a controlled factory environment. The main structure of the movable manufacturing facility is sufficiently tall to allow assembly and movement of standard size homes within. Multiple independent production lines (P1-P5) are established to each produce portions of the dwelling in the form of subassemblies. Finishes, cabinets, appliances, roofs, paint, etc., are installed in the partially completed dwellings prior to houses leaving the production floor. The movable manufacturing facility allows a standard size home under construction to be advanced via a transport element (T) from one production line to the next until complete. The completed homes are subsequently transported on the transport element over a controlled access roadway to individual sites with pre-constructed foundations specifically designed to accept these standard size dwellings. The standard size house can be relocated from the transport element and placed directly onto the foundation. High capacity hoisting, such as clear span bridge cranes (H1-H3), are the key to material handling and transportation on the production lines in the movable manufacturing facility. A drive through alley large enough to accommodate semi-trucks with loaded trailers may be located within the main structure of the movable manufacturing facility.

In order to provide a pre-assembled, relocatable building structure which can be transported by road from one site to another, a metal skeleton which is formed of 6x2 inch rectangular cross-section hollow steel tubing, is welded together and provided with horizontally extending anchor brackets at the bottom of each vertically extending column member. These anchor pads allow the building to be lowered onto foundations in which anchor bolts are imbedded, and bolted in place. The foundations are formed so as to take the form of continuous elongate footers which break the passage of wind which tends to flow sideways under the housing structure. A shallow crawl space can formed between the foundation footers to facilitate service connections. To prevent winds from tearing off side and roof panels of roof and wall structures secured to the skeleton, metal brackets are used to enclose or encapsulate the edges of the panels in a manner which prevents the direct contact with the wind.

A mobile metal building forming machine (30, 34, 38, 40, 68, 74) forms a panel (P) of predetermined length from a coil of flat metal and then the formed panels are continuously crimped on their side edges (Cs) for strength and are selectively curved by crimping the bottom (Cb) of the panel. The crimping and curvature are automatically controlled so that building panels with vertical walls and an arched roof may be formed. A moveable crimping roll (70, 72) is automatically portioned to control the curvature and the roll is chain driven (94, 98, 102) so that it may be moved without affecting its rotational drive.

The sheet material is formed into a panel (P) having a flat bottom and sides while length of the formed panel is monitored to control the operation of the forming device. The panel is then fed into a curve-forming device (68) which crimps at least a portion of the panel so that it is arched or curved. The curvature of the output panel (Cb) is monitored (74) to control the location of adjustable crimper rollers (70, 72) disposed in the curve-forming device (68) to provide the portion of the panel with an accurate preselected curvature. The length of the curved portion of the panel is monitored (58) when producing panels having both straight and curved portions, and the crimper rollers (70, 72) automatically reset to form portions with a different radius of curvature.
