An optical disc drive equipped with a TLN signal generating apparatus is disclosed. The TLN signal generating apparatus includes a TLN signal generating circuit (112) for generating a TLN signal (track loss signal) based on signals obtained from an optical pick-up; a digitizing circuit (76) for digitizing the TLN signal by comparing it with a reference level; and a correction circuit (13,114,115,116,117) for correcting the TLN signal so that it is accurately digitized by the digitizing circuit irrespective of an offset component which is a direct current component contained in the TLN signal. The correction circuit is comprised of an offset component detecting circuit (13,17,114) for detecting a level of the offset component contained in the TLN signal; and a signal control circuit (115,116,117) for controlling, responsive to the level of the offset component detected by the offset component detecting circuit, a level of the TLN signal generated by the TLN signal generating circuit so that the level of the TLN signal will become a level which does not receive any influence from the level of the direct component. The correction circuit can also be comprised of a signal correcting circuit which amplifies an alternating current component contained in the TLN signal without eliminating a directed current component contained in the TLN signal.

In a rotation servo circuit (18) for use in a shock-proof disk player employing a bulk memory (23) of a large capacity, a high speed mode and a low speed mode are prepared for driving a disk (1) in such a manner that the high speed mode is selected only upon occurrence of a track jump, and there are prepared a speed control reference clock signal of 16.9344 MHz corresponding to the high speed mode and another reference clock signal of 11.2896 MHz corresponding to the low speed mode. Normally a 1.33-fold speed play based on the clock signal of 11.2896 MHz is performed, but upon occurrence of a track jump, the clock frequency is switched to 16.9344 MHz to thereby select a 2-fold speed play, and in response to an overflow of the bulk memory, the low speed mode is selected again to resume the 1.33-fold speed play.

A disk discrimination apparatus for use in an optical disk reproducing apparatus detects a tracking error signal to discriminate between disks, and prevents reproduction of a disk which does not correspond to the reproducing apparatus. In the disk discrimination apparatus, when a second type disk having a track pitch which is smaller than that of a first type disk is played by the optical disk reproducing apparatus, a discriminator detects that the disk is not a first type disk based on an output signal of a tracking error signal generating circuit. The discriminator performs a discrimination operation by comparing the signal level of a signal passed through the tracking error signal generating circuit with a predetermined reference value. In another embodiment, the discriminator includes a counter for counting the number of zero-crossings of the signal passed through the tracking error signal generating circuit, and performs the disk discrimination using a count value of the counter. In a further embodiment, when the second type disk is played by the optical disk reproducing apparatus, the discriminator detects that the disk is not a first type disk based on an output signal of a focus sum signal.
