The invention relates to a method for regulating a voltage (U) in a distribution network (VN) that supplies nodes (KN) with voltage via mains power lines (NL). In said method, a node (KN), which recognizes that the local voltage of the distribution network (VN) present at said node lies above or below a permissible supply voltage range, switches from slave mode (SB) to master mode (MB) and in said master mode (MB) regulates the local voltage (U) that is present, by drawing or supplying reactive power (Q) in order to reach the permissible supply voltage range. The node (KN) then indicates this to other nodes (KN) of the distribution network (VN) that are in slave mode (SB) by modulating an indication signal pattern (ASM) onto the reactive power (Q) being drawn or supplied by said node, the signal pattern having a signal parameter which is proportional to the amplitude of the reactive power (Q) that is drawn or supplied by said node (KN).

We describe a modular adjustable power factor renewable energy inverter system. The system comprises a plurality of inverter modules having a switched capacitor across its ac power output, a power measurement system coupled to a communication interface, and a power factor controller to control switching of the capacitor. A system controller receives power data from each inverter module, sums the net level of ac power from each inverter, determines a number of said capacitors to switch based on the sum, and sends control data to an appropriate number of the inverter modules to switch the determined number of capacitors into/out of said parallel connection across their respective ac power outputs.

In a first operating mode, the switch is closed, such that an energy storage current flows to or from the energy storage device to charge or discharge the energy storage device, respectively, using the converter' for any necessary conversion between AC and DC. In a second operating mode, the switch is open, preventing current from flowing from the transmission line to the converter, and the energy storage device supplies a direct current which is converted to an alternating current by the converter. Moreover, in the first operating mode, the apparatus is configured such that a power transfer on the transmission line corresponds to a surge impedance loading of the transmission line, by affecting the energy storage current. A corresponding method is also presented.
