The invention relates to a hydrogel containing chemically modified proteins and polysaccharides. A method is additionally provided for producing a hydrogel from mixtures of proteins and polysaccharides. According to the invention, the proteins and polysaccharides are chemically modified in a covalent manner and chemically crosslinked in an intermolecular manner in the method. The chemically derivatized protein-polysaccharide blend (PPB for short) produced according to the invention is characterized in that the PPB forms a hydrogel in an aqueous medium. The PPB hydrogel according to the invention is characterized by a high water binding potential and a strong adhesive effect. In the field of construction chemistry for example, the PPB hydrogel according to the invention has an advantageous effect on the adhesive and sliding behavior of tiles.

The present invention generates uniform pigment particles which comprise, for instance, starch esters, and which particles have a porous surface structure, in which case they are suitable for instance as coating pigments and fillers for offset and ink-jet papers.

The subject matter of the present invention is a method for preparing a starch-based thermoplastic composition, comprising the following steps: (a) selecting at least one granular starch and at least one organic plasticizer for this starch, (b) preparing a plasticized composition by thermomechanically mixing this starch and this plasticizer, (c) optionally incorporating at least one functional substance carrying functions comprising an active hydrogen, (d) incorporating at least one bonding agent carrying at least two functional groups capable of reacting with molecules carrying functions comprising an active hydrogen, and optionally (e) heating the mixture to a temperature sufficient to cause the bonding agent to react with the plasticizer and with the starch and/or the functional substance, it being possible for steps (d) and (e) to be carried out simultaneously, and also a starch-based thermoplastic composition that can be obtained by means of this method.

The starch derivative can be degraded by reaction with an exo-enzyme capable of cleaving 1,4-α-D-glucosidic linkages from non-reducing ends of starch, but incapable of cleaving 1,6-α-D-glucosidic linkages of starch. Such emulsifier achieves stable compositions that are salt tolerant and do not exhibit tackiness. Further, the emulsifier is ethoxylate-free and can be used in a variety of compositions, including cosmetic compositions.

A biodegradable polymer is disclosed having the composition g) from 8 to 80 % by weight of a starch modified to include an hydroxyalkyl C2-6 group or modified by reaction with an anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid, preferably hydroxypropylated high amylose starch, a) from 0 to 87.9 % of starch, b) from 4 to 11 % by weight of a water soluble polymer selected from polyvinylacetate, polyvinyl alcohol and copolymers of ehtylene and vinylalcohol which have a melting point compatible with the molten state of the starch components, c) from 0 to 20 % by weight of a polyol plasticiser, preferably glycerol, d) from 0.1 to 1.5 % by weight of a C12-22 fatty acid or salt, preferably stearic acid and, e) 0 to 12 % added water. The polymers are suitable as biodegradable rigid sheet or flexible film materials for use in packaging foodstuffs.
