A flow enhanced method and system for flow non-linear magnetophoresis (F-NLM) is described. By tuning an external field frequency and the flow rate the migration velocities of different bead types may be caused to differ by several orders of magnitude over an extended range of frequencies to allow for separation of particles. Use of such efficiency in separation in bio-separation and similar assays is described.

The present invention with regard to a method for separating metal-containing fractions from slag comprising the successive steps of: Supplying the slag; processing the slag into fractions; pre-separating the fractions with a magnetic separator where substantially all iron-containing fractions are separated; and separating non-ferrous metal-containing fractions by using an eddy current separator. Characteristic for the method according to the invention is that the slag is dry when the slag is processed to obtain fractions. It is, furthermore, characteristic for the method according to the invention that the fractions have a size of at most 5 mm with regard to the pre-separation and separation of non-ferrous metal-containing fractions. Advantageously fine dust fractions with a dimension of at most 1 mm are separated from the stream of fractions with a size of 5 mm or less, preferably in the step where iron-containing fractions are separated.

The invention pertains to a process for separating mixtures of finely divided materials consisting of non-ferromagnetic particles and ferromagnetic particles with a maximum particle size of up to 1 mm by means of a magnetic field. The mixture is conveyed in a transport direction over a conveyor surface; magnetic fields with constantly changing field direction are produced by a moving magnetic system with alternating poles (N, S) situated on the underside of the conveyor surface, and the mixture migrates on the conveyor surface over the magnetic fields produced by the magnetic system in the transport direction. When the ferromagnetic particles pass through the magnetic field above the conveyor surface they are attracted to the conveyor surface by the magnetic field and, depending on the size of the ferromagnetic particles and/or the alternating speed of the magnetic system, the ferromagnetic particles are deflected and discharged counter to or in the direction of movement of the magnetic system, out of the transport direction of the mixture.

An apparatus and method for carrying out the affinity separation of a target substance from a test medium operates by mixing magnetic particles having surface immobilized ligand or receptor with the test medium to promote affinity binding reaction between the ligand and the target substance. The test medium with the magnetic particles in a suitable container is removably mounted in an apparatus of the present invention and magnetic field gradient is created in the test medium. This gradient induces the magnetic particles to move relative to the test medium, thereby effecting mixing. Depending on the embodiment employed, the mixing is achieved either by the movement of an electromagnet or a permanent magnet relative to a stationary container or the movement of the container relative to a stationary magnetic source. After sufficient time for the affinity reaction to occur, the movement of the magnetic gradient is ended, whereby magnetic particles are immobilized on the inside wall of the container nearest to the magnetic source. The remaining test medium is removed while the magnetic particles are retained on the walls of the container and the test medium or the particles subjected to further processing.

A method of separating predetermined non-magnetic electrically conductive items from a flow of non-magnetic electrically conductive materials containing such items comprises the steps of passing the flow of materials adjacent to electromagnetic field (3) generating apparatus; subjecting the materials to the action of a fluid (6) whilst the flow of materials is adjacent to the electromagnetic field generating apparatus; controlling the flux field generated by the apparatus such as to create electrical current within the predetermined electrically conductive items which react with the generated electromagnetic flux field causing the creation of a directional force upon the predetermined items, in association with the subjection thereof to the fluid (6), such as to move only the predetermined electrically conductive items out of and away from the flow of material in a predetermined direction for a predetermined distance (4). In another aspect the method comprises passing the flow of materials adjacent to a linear induction motor (3); controlling the flux field generated by the linear induction motor and providing a pulse of such field by switching on and off the linear induction motor at a frequency lower than the supply frequency such as to create consequential pulsed electric currents within the predetermined electrically conductive items which react with the pulsed generated electromagnetic flux field causing the creation of an intermittent force upon the predetermined items such as to move only the predetermined electrically conductive items out of and away from the flow of materials.

A method is described for separating a mixture of flat metal alloy particles in which the particles of one alloy are generally smaller and less conductive than the particles of another alloy, e.g. a scrap mixture of aluminum-lithium alloy and other wrought aluminum alloys. In this method, the scrap mixture is thermally pretreated and then crushed into relatively flat particles, such that the aluminum-lithium alloy is fragmented into smaller particle sizes than the other wrought alloys. These particles are then physically separated based on differences in particle size, density and/or electric conductivity. For instance, the separation may be done by an eddy current separator or a dense media separator.
