A satellite communications system having ground user terminals, hubs, and a geosynchronous satellite. The satellite generates a network of spot beam coverage areas on the earth. A hub and at least one ground terminal are located in each of at least two spot beams. A first user terminal transmits an uplink signal according to a first signal protocol to the hub through the satellite. A second user terminal receives a downlink signal according to a second signal protocol through the downlink spot beam from the hub through the satellite. The hub may be located in the same spot beam coverage area as the first or the second user terminal or may be located in an altogether different spot beam coverage area. Through selective frequency and/or polarization routing on board the satellite, a hub located within a "parent" beam can communicate with user terminals within the parent beam at a specified frequency and polarization, and can communicate with users in other "dependent" beams on a different frequency and/or polarization. This routing allocates the total available bandwidth between parent and dependent beams. The system enables asynchronous communications between each hub and the satellite to maximize frequency re-use and the overall capacity of the system.

A low-profile antenna system to be mounted to a moving vehicle for receiving signals, such as from a Digital Broadcast Satellite, includes a base for mounting to the surface of the vehicle, a platen mounted to the base for rotation, an azimuth drive motor for rotating the platen, an array of half-cylinder antenna elements mounted to the platen, an elevation drive motor for pivoting the antenna elements individually about their axes to change the elevation at which the antenna elements are pointing, and a cover. The azimuth drive motor and the elevation drive motor together allow the array of antenna elements to be pointed at a satellite over a wide range of vehicle orientations.

A method and system is presented for the bi-directional transfer of data packets over a TCP communications system that can comprise both terrestrial and satellite links, (“RL”, “FL”) using an enhanced flight protocol (“FP”) that, transparently to the end users, replaces the TCP over the congested satellite link portion of the system that accelerates the data delivery between end users and improves reliability of the data packet transmission. The invention eliminates the conventional TCP 3-way handshake and other associated time-delay procedures and replaces them with an improved use of performance enhancing proxies at either end of the satellite link that use a unique acknowledgement methods, data buffer storage and packet header field arrangement among the design features of a flight protocol method and system that accelerates data packet transfer with more efficient link capacity use and greater data throughput.

The RFID tag reader is configured to identify a first RFID tag (120) attached to a first object (125) placed on the cart and eliminate identification of a second RFID tag (135) attached to a second object (130) outside a perimeter of the object-stacking surface by repeating interrogations (1610) during a validation period (1605) and using a confidence factor (1620) to validate the RFID tag data of the first tag. The RFID tag data is stored in a database (1625, 1635) and a further interrogation is performed after the validation period. A system comprising a RFID reader which reads the RFID tag of a first object and measures the change in weight on the object stacking surface is also disclosed.

The present invention is directed to a circuit assembly that includes an integrated circulator assembly. The circuit assembly has a first substrate, which contains a continuous circuit trace that includes a circulator component from the circulator assembly and at least one electrical component from the circuit assembly. A second substrate is disposed beneath the first substrate and includes a cladding on one surface. The second substrate contains an aperture that accepts a ferrite element, which is axially aligned with the circulator component of the circuit trace. A conductive material is placed across the ferrite element so that it forms a continuous ground plane with the cladding, which is common to the entire circuit trace. The circulator assembly also contains a magnet bonded to the ferrite element. The circulator assembly may also include a yoke disposed below the magnet to shield the circulator from external magnetic fields.

An antenna assembly comprising a radiating element which passively receives a signal fed by a vertically-stacked pair of asymmetrically-shaped, conductive cone elements mounted below the radiating element. The cone elements are centrally fed by a coaxial cable input at a common junction formed the apex of each cone element. This antenna assembly provides a low-profile antenna to transmit and receive radio frequency (RF) energy with high gain and desirable antenna patterns for data transmission in an in-building, wireless local area network The antenna assembly can be mounted in a standard ceiling or wall-mounted enclosure, with the low-profile antenna extending beneath the surface of a conductive enclosure cover that serves as the ground plane for the antenna element. This configuration achieves high antenna gain with a downtilt-beam, omnidirectional radiation pattern, which is highly desirable in an in-building wireless local area network (WLAN) application.
