Compounds useful as antibacterial agents are provided. The compounds are analogs of indole-3-carbinol and have a backbone selected from dihydroindolo[2,3-b]carbazole, 2,2′-diindolylmethane, 2′,3-diindolylmethane, and 3,3′-diindolylmethane. The compounds are useful therapeutic and prophylactic treatment of bacterial infections in mammals. Methods of synthesis of the compounds are provided, as are pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds.

Electroactive polymers that are pre-strained to improve conversion from electrical to mechanical energy are disclosed. When a voltage is applied to electrodes contacting a pre-strained polymer, the polymer deflects. This deflection may be used to do mechanical work. The pre-strain improves the mechanical response of an electroactive polymer. Furthermore, actuators including an electroactive polymer and mechanical coupling to convert deflection of the polymer into mechanical work are disclosed. Compliant electrodes that conform to the shape of a polymer are also disclosed. Methods for fabricating electromechanical devices including one or more electroactive polymers are provided.

Novel and anti-estrogenic compounds are provided which are useful to treat a variety of disorders, particularly estrogen-dependant disorders. Preferred compounds have 1,3,5-estratiene nucleus, and are substituted at the C-17 or C-11 position with a molecular moiety which renders the compounds effective to competitively block the binding of estrogen to its receptor. Particularly preferred compounds are 17-desoxy-1,3,5-estratienes. Therapeutic methods and pharmaceutical compositions are provided as well.

The invention is directed to manipulator assembly (2) for holding and manipulating a surgical instrument (14) in a telerobotic system. The manipulator assembly includes an instrument holder removably coupled to a drive assembly so that the holder can be sterilized. The assembly further includes a force sensing element (52) mounted distal to the holder and the drive assembly for detecting forces exerted on the surgical instrument and providing feedback to the surgeon. The invention is also directed to a system and method for releasably holding a surgical instrument (14). The system includes an instrument support for automatically locking mounting pins on the instrument within locking slots on the instrument holder to releasably couple the instrument to the holder. With a twist-lock motion, the surgeon can rapidly engage and disengage various instruments from the holder during a surgical procedure, such as open surgery, laparoscopy or thoracoscopy.

A surgical system and surgical instruments for a telerobitic system are disclosed. In one embodiment, the surgical instrument has an elongate shaft having a proximal portion, a distal portion, an inner lumen, and at least one axially extending slot. An end effector is disposed adjacent the distal portion of the elongate shaft and an actuator assembly, comprising a linkage, is disposed within the inner lumen. A movable actuator pin extends laterally from the linkage and through the axially extending slot to releasably couple the actuator assembly to a driver of a robotic surgical instrument holder. The system disclosed may enable the rapid engagement and disengagement of surgical instruments from an instrument holder during surgical procedures.
