Automatic gain control in a hearing aid is effected by detecting an input sound level and/or an output sound level and adapting the output sound level supplied by the hearing aid in response to the detected sound level by controlling the gain of the hearing aid towards an actual desired value of the output sound level. The gain control is effected at increases and decreases, respectively, of the input sound level by adjusting the gain towards the actual desired value with an attack time and a release time, respectively, which are adjusted in response to the detected sound level to a relatively short duration providing fast gain adjustment at high input and/or output sound levels and to a relatively long duration providing slow gain adjustment at low input and/or output sound levels.

A binaural digital hearing aid system comprises two hearing aid units (1, 2) for arrangement in a user's left and right ear, respectively. Each unit comprises input signal transducer means (3r, 3l), A/D conversion means (4r, 4l), digital signal processing means (5r-13r, 5l-13l), D/A conversion means (14r, 14l) and output signal transducer means (15r, 15l). A bi-directional communication link (7) is provided between the units. The digital signal processing means of each unit is arranged to affect a substantially full digital signal processing including individual processing of signals from the input transducer means of the actual unit and simulated processing of signals from the input transducer means of the other unit as well as binaural signal processing and includes at least a first digital signal processor part (5r, 5l) for processing said internally supplied signal, a second digital signal processor part (6l, 6r) for processing the signal supplied via said communication link (7) and a third digital signal processor part (9r, 9l) to effect common binaural digital signal processing of information derived from the signals processed in said first and second digital signal processor parts, said second digital signal processor part (6l, 6r) in each unit simulating the first digital signal processor part (5l, 5r) in the other unit with respect to adjustment parameters controlling the performance of said first signal processor part in said other unit.

The recess (8) comprises a first region (9) for insertion of the battery (23) and a second region (10) coherent with the first region for placing of a socket part (11) of the electronic module (4), and at the edge of the recess (8) the faceplate (2) is formed with engaging means (12-16) for the socket part (11), whereas further parts of the electronic module (4) are placed below the faceplate (2). The recess (8) is formed such that at removal of the battery (23) the first and second regions (9, 10) together allow passage also of said further parts (6, 7) for removal of the complete electronic module.

The output amplifier (4) is designed essentially as a Σ-Δamplifier and is connected to a pulse generator (8) which produces a high-frequency pulsed signal in the 1 MHz region as well as a series-connected low-pass filter (15). The input signal to the signal converter is a representation, produced by signal processing, of the low-frequency input signal to the hearing aid, this signal being converted in the signal converter into a signal which can have only two possible values. The output signal (14) thus appears, after passing through the low-pass filter, essentially as an amplified copy of the low-frequency input signal.

These percent values are directly or indirectly used as control signals for regulating the amplification and/or the frequency response of the electronic signal processing circuit. At least one percentage generator (10) connected at the input side consists of an integrator (11), a first incrementing control stage (12) connected to the integrator (11) and a second counting down control stage (13) connected to the first control stage (12), as well as a comparing stage (14) with at least two inputs. The input of the circuit is directly or indirectly connected to the input of the comparing stage (14), whereas a second input of the comparing stage is connected to the output of the integrator (11) and is directly or indirectly connected to the signal processing circuit (3) through a combination and control logic (15) by at least one control line. Both outputs of the comparing stage (14) are connected to the control stage (12) or to the control stage (13).
