A color display comprising a white light source, a first color polarizer (3A), an active matrix liquid crystal cell (1), a second color polarizer (3B), the second liquid crystal cell (2A), a third color polarizer (3C), and the third liquid crystal cell (2B), wherein the active matrix liquid crystal cell (1) functions as an image forming element, wherein the second and the first liquid crystal cells (2A, 2B) have a function as an optical switch to selectively transmit the three primary colors of light depending on a particular combination of on and off thereof, and wherein by driving the above two cells (2A, 2B) in synchronization with each other, images corresponding to the primary colors of light are displayed sequentially so as to realize a full color display.
