An open roof construction for a vehicle is provided, comprising a roof opening (1) in a stationary roof part (2), a movable panel (3) for opening and closing said roof opening and two panel operating assemblies (4) positioned at two opposite longitudinal sides of the roof opening. As seen in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, the panel operating assemblies (4) have a varying width in the transverse direction of the vehicle. In one embodiment the width of the panel operating assemblies varies in a gradual and/or step-wise fashion. In another embodiment the width of the panel operating assemblies decreases in a forward and/or backward direction of the vehicle.
