Below and adjacent to the fold rollers are adjustable nip rollers (38) to form nip spacing between the rollers. The adjustable nip roller is mounted on a nip axis shaft (40). An adjustment mechanism (48) is used for moving the nip axis shaft to adjust the nip spacing. The nip adjustment mechanism includes a bearing block cam follower (51) on which the nip axis shaft is fixedly mounted and supported. An eccentric cam (52) in operative contact with the bearing block cam follower. Rotation of the eccentric cam on the eccentric cam axis drives the bearing block cam follower in its linear motion to adjust the nip spacing.

The novel solution provides a method for feeding of individual envelopes (20) from a stack of envelopes (19) in a hopper (10) for an inserter machine. At the downstream end of the hopper, a friction feeder (26) serially feeds individual envelopes from the stack. A suction cup (30) is selectively actuated to engage with the envelope to pull a leading portion of the envelope away from the stack to assist the friction feeder in feeding envelopes. Selective actuation is based on monitoring downstream movement of fed envelopes. The suction cup is engaged when the envelopes travel a shorter distance than would be expected based on the movement of the feeder.

A system for conveying mailpieces (14) along a feed path (FP) includes a plurality of conveyances (20, 22). A first conveyance (20) is operative to convey mailpieces (14) along the feed path (FP) and includes a singulating (40) and drive belt (42). The singulating and drive belts (40,42) define a throat (TH) for singulating a mailpiece (14) from the stack of mailpieces. A second conveyance (22) accepts mailpieces from the first conveyance (20) and conveys singulated mailpiece downstream of the first conveyance (20). The system further includes a series of sensors (30) extending from the first to the second conveyance for issuing a gap signal (G) indicative of the relative spacing between sequential mailpieces (14) along the feed path (FP). Additionally, the system includes a means (26; RA; M1), responsive to the gap signal (G), for developing a variable opposing force between the singulating and drive belts (40, 42) to optimize singulation of mailpieces (14) along the feed path (FP).

An envelope hopper (10) having a plurality of bottom rods (30-34) to form a supporting surface for supporting a stack of envelopes (100) and a paddle (42) to push the envelopes towards an envelope feeder (20) at the downstream end. A scrub wheel (44) is rotatably mounted on a fixed, rotation axis on the paddle and is in contact with one of the bottom rods. The rotation axis of the scrub wheel is oriented at an angle relative to the rotation axis of the contacting rod, so that when the contacting rod rotates, it causes the scrub wheel to rotate, thereby producing a force on the paddle urging the paddle to move towards the downstream end. Preferably, the envelope hopper has a side rod (36) on one side of the envelope stack, and the supporting surface is tilted from the horizontal surface, so that the envelopes are moved towards the side rod by gravity in order to register against the side rod. Preferably, the side rod also rotates in order to reduce the friction between the envelope stack and the side rod.
