The laser is a multi-emitter or broad emitter semiconductor laser capable of producing one or more output beams. The lens system may include focusing optics to focus radiation in the near field pattern emitted from the laser in the first direction and in the far field pattern of radiation emitted from the laser in the second direction.

A multi-emitter extended source solid state laser (2) designed to emit light beams at multiple wavelengths within a narrow total spectral bandwidth, that is, a relatively incoherent composite output beam of narrow total spectral bandwidth, is used as the input to a multimode optical fiber (4) of an optic communications link or network. By providing an incoherent composite laser beam input to the fiber, modal noise due to coherence effects is virtually eliminated, so that such effects no loriger affect network performance. In addition, because the source is extended, a more uniform illumination of the fiber face is achieved. An exemplary multi-emitter laser would consist of an array of simultaneously driven emitting regions or cavities which operate in multiple longitudinal modes.

An optical cursor control device or "optical mouse" (10) is disclosed for use with an interactive, display oriented computer system to provide movement for a visible cursor from position to position on a display screen of such a system. The cursor control device (10) provides an output indicative of the amount and direction of movement of the device relative to an orthogonal coordiante system. The device relies on a planar grid pattern (18) comprising orthogonally positioned grid lines (19) of uniform spacing, one line (19) and spacing (20) defining a grid period Means (12) is provided to illuminate at least a portion of the grid pattern. Sensor array means (14, 16) comprising optical transducers are provided for each orthogonal direction. Each optical transducer (14, 16) has an elongated radiation detecting area (15,17) to receive radiation from an elongated radiation collecting area (22) at the plane of said grid pattern (18). The length of the radiation collecting area of each transducer is equal to or greater than a grid period and the width of these areas is equal to or narrower than the width of one half of the grid period.

The LSTV profile is one producing an effective, although small, lateral retractive index variation in the active region, thereby permitting the maintenance of the lowest order transverse mode alone the plane of the active region.

An injection laser of the multilayer planar type, such as, heterostmcture GaAs:GaAlAs lasers are provided with offset geometry (26, 54, 84. 1 66 and Fig. 8) in the configuration of a current confining structure on surface of the device to stabilize the propagating optical beam such that the power output versus current pumping characteristic is linear over an extended range of operating currents. The same offset geometry may also be provided in a channel (162, 184, 204) of the substrate to provide additional or alternate means for stabilizing the propagating optical bearn.
