摘要: A process for regenerating spent bleaching clays and acid-activated smectite catalyst granules includes: (1) an extraction step to remove a majority of entrained hydrocarbons, such as oil, preferably about 75% to about 95% by weight of the entrained oil, when regenerating bleaching clays; (2) an oxidation step to remove the majority of remaining carbonaceous adsorbates which are not removed by the preceding extraction step, and to carbonize a majority of the remaining adsorbates, thereby increasing the adsorption capacity of the clay; and, optionally, (3) an acid wash step to restore the acidity normally associated with fresh acid-activated bleaching clays. In a second embodiment, the clay is oxidized with O₂ at a temperature below about 360°C to carbonize a portion of the hydrocarbons remaining after extraction.

摘要: There is disclosed an article of manufacture (and a method of using same) useful for preventing flow of water therethrough by hydration of a water-swellable clay composition comprising a cohesive mass of a water-swellable clay (12) in essentially non-hydrated form, said water-swellable clay (12) present in an amount of at least 20% by weight of the total composition, and a non-aqueous liquid binder capable of adhering the clay together without substantial hydration of said clay, said composition having a flexible, elongated structural support material (40; 42; 44) embedded in said composition to prevent the composition from being displaced from its intended location in use. Preferably the clay composition is a non-hydrated, bentonite composition including an intimate mixture of bentonite clay with a non-aqueous liquid binder, such as polypropene or polybutene, to form a cohesive, non-hydrated, shapeable bentonite composition, and the composition is adhered to a structural, flexible, support material either within the interior of the composition, or on at least one major outer surface of the composition. In one embodiment of the invention, an elastomer such as partially cross-linked butyl rubber is included in the composition. The elastomer has sufficient resiliency to stretch upon hydration of the bentonite and adds structural integrity to the composition. Additional additives may be included in the formable bentonite composition, such as tackifiers, viscosity modifiers, thickeners, extenders and the like.

摘要: There is disclosed a method of manufacturing a water barrier fabric, in flexible or rigid form, and article manufactured thereby, formed by dispersing a water-absorbent material, in powdered or granular form (20), among a mass of fibres (14) during the formation of a loose mat (18) of said fibres, to homogeneously disperse the powdered or granular water-absorbent material (20) above, below and on each side of the fibres forming the mat (18), and thereafter densifying and structurally consolidating the mat (18), to secure the fibres (14) in position surrounding and entrapping the water-absorbent material (20), such as by sewing, quilting, needle punching or otherwise bonding the fibres into a consolidated, structurally secure fabric at least partially filled with the powdered or granular water-absorbent material (18).

摘要: Discrete particles of a water-swellable bentonite clay effectively absorb animal dross and simultaneously agglomerate into a sufficiently large and stable mass, thereby permitting physical separation of the soiled and wetted water-swellable bentonite clay particles from discrete particles of the unsoiled and unwetted water-swellable bentonite clay. In another embodiment, the composition comprises discrete particles of a combination of water-swellable sodium bentonite clay and calcium bentonite clay that effectively absorbs animal dross and simultaneously agglomerates into a water-dispersible but physically stable mass, thereby permitting physical separation of the soiled and wetted bentonite clay particles from discrete particles of the unsoiled and unwetted water-swellable bentonite clay, and has sufficient water-dispersibility for disposal through a household plumbing or sewer conduit without clogging.
