The system comprises a current impedance device (70) and a downhole power storage device (112). The current impedance device (70) is positioned such that when a time-varying electrical current is transmitted through the portion of a piping structure (30 and/or 40) a voltage potential forms between one side (81) of the current impedance device (70) and another side (82) of the current impedance device (70). The device (112) is adapted to be electrically connected to the piping structure (30 and/or 40) across the voltage potential formed by the current impedance device (70), is adapted to be recharged by the electrical current, and is adapted to be electrically connected to the downhole device (50) to provide power to the downhole device (50) as needed.

A petroleum well having a wireless power and data communication system is provided. The well uses the tubing and/or casing to communicate with and power a plurality of devices, such as sensors and controllable valves. An electrically isolating portion of a tubing hanger at the surface of the well and a ferromagnetic choke downhole may electrically isolate the tubing from the casing and provide a communications path. A plurality of modems positioned downhole along the tubing string communicate sensor information to a modem and a computer located at the surface of the well. Based on an analysis of the sensor information received by the computer, instructions can be communicated along the tubing string to the controllable valves to adjust the flow rate of lift gas passing through the valves.

A controllable gas-lift well having controllable gas-lift valves and sensors for detecting flow regime is provided. The well uses the tubing and casing to communicate with and power the controllable valve from the surface. Ferromagnetic chokes at the surface and downhole electrically isolate the tubing from the casing. A high band-width, adaptable spread spectrum communication system is used to communicate between the controllable valve and the surface. Sensors, such as pressure, temperature, and acoustic sensors, may be provided downhole to more accurately assess downhole conditions and in particular, flow regime. Operating conditions, such as gas injection rate, back pressure on tubing and position of downhole controllable valves are varied depending on flow regime, downhole conditions, oil production, gas usage and availability, to optimize production. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is trained to detect Taylor flow regime using downhole acoustic sensors, plus other sensors as desired. The detection and control system and method thereof is useful in many applications involving multi-phase flow in a conduit.

A system for verifying the effectiveness of electromagnetic signal control of a subsurface safety valve installed in a well. Signals are transmitted from a surface station to actuate the subsurface installed valve. Signals received at the valve are decoded and information relating to them is stored. A sensor detects actual valve actuation and provides signals indicative thereof which are also stored. After the valve is removed from its downhole installation, the stored signals are read, and the data indicated thereby is compared with data recorded at the time of signal transmission from the surface.
