Der Multiplexrahmen (MR) enthält die Datenbits (D) der Envelopes (EN) und einen Teil der Steuerbits (S, A) der Envelopes (EN). Der verbleibende Teil der Steuerbits (S, A) wird durch Zuordnungsbits (Z) ersetzt, die eine Zuordnung der Datenbits (D) des Multiplexrahmens (MR) zu den einzelnen Datenkanälen (K1 bis Kn) festlegen.

A master unit (1) sends a start signal to a slave unit (2). When receiving the start signal from the master unit (1), the slave unit (2) sends, to the master unit (1), a synchronization field that is a data train (pulse signal) indicative of a transfer clock with which the slave unit (2) is able to perform transferring and receiving operations. The master unit (1) sends, to the slave unit (2), command data in accordance with the transfer clock indicated by the synchronization field sent from the slave unit (2). In response to the command data sent from the master unit (1), the slave unit (2) sends, to the master unit (1), response data in accordance with the transfer clock indicated by the synchronization field. Thus, in a communication system employing a serial data transferring apparatus of the present invention, the master unit (1) establishes the synchronization for the data transfer, while the slave unit (2) is free from a burden of establishing the synchronization for the data transfer. A serial data transferring apparatus is realized which can simplify the structure of the slave unit, cut the total cost, and reduce noise.

The invention enables a distinction to be made between at least two types of time slots in serial digital bit streams that are transmitted over a link (2) between a transmitter (4) and a receiver (6) and that derive from the streams of parallel data bits which are delivered to the transmitter via an interface and subjected to parallel-series conversion in the transmitter. Subsequent to analyzing the parallel data bits in a time slot, the type of category to which this time slot belongs is decided and a plurality of marker bits are then inserted into the serial time slots, so as to obtain good transmission properties and also to restore the time slots to a parallel form. More specifically, the time slot categories are mutually separated with the aid of a different number of marker bits in the time slot, all of these marker bits having been assigned the inverted value of a bit other than the marker bits.

The apparatus is provided with input ports (1.0∼1-(N-1)) for inputting a packet in a respective input port; buffer memories (3-0∼3-(n-1)) provided for each input port for temporary storage of a packet; an output signal transmission circuit (4) for retrieving a packet from each buffer memory in a specific sequence; an output port (2) for transmitting packets output from the output signal transmission circuit; and a retrieval sequencing section (10 or 20 or 30) for controlling the specific sequence by changing a retrieving order of packets from buffer memories for each complete round of packet retrieval so that a frequency of the retrieving order for each input port is uniformly shared by the input ports.

The exchange unit also comprises a routing device (60) for each connection device, which together form a node in a hierarchical transport network comprising ring shaped highspeed links. A message writing device then sends messages to a message reading device via a routing device and possibly via other routing devices and bridges in the transport network.

An LD-CELP coder 211 codes an input signal supplied through a telephone line based on the low-delay code-excited linear prediction. A speech detector 212 detects voice/no-voice of the input signal. A FAX terminal input detector 213 detects a FAX signal. A multiplexer 214 multiplexes the coded data and the voice/no-voice data through bit steal of one bit per frame from the code. In a CLAD (cell assembling and disassembling) unit 300, a speech data frame is detected, and also the voice/no-voice information that has been multiplexed in the coded data is detected. If the voice/no-voice information indicates voice, the coded data is converted to cell data to be sent out to a transmission line. Concurrently with the operation of the coder, FAX terminal input data is all converted to cell data and sent out to the transmission line independently of the voice/no-voice information.

The invention relates to a communication system in which transmission takes place according to a format which permits different types of data to be combined and transmitted within a single transmission. The novel feature is that the communication system transmits variable length frames of data in packets, and that a data combining and transmission sub-system (14, 16, 18, 20) is provided so that when a frame of data does not require a complete packet for transmission, the data combining sub-system combines the frame of data with additional data to provide a complete packet. The data combining sub-system comprises input means for receiving the frame of data and the additional data and for combining the frame of data and the additional data to provide a complete packet responsive to a control signal, and control means for providing the control signal.
