A method for producing cold heat for cooling a process is provided. Seawater is pumped at a selected depth and cooled to create a mixture of ice and brine. The ice is separated from the brine. Cold heat is obtained by thawing the ice. A process cooling system for producing cold heat is also provided. A pumping station comprises a line system to obtain seawater and direct the seawater to an onshore cooling plant. A refrigerant circulates in an evaporation stage in a refrigeration circuit. A heat exchanger in the evaporation stage freezes a portion of the seawater in the line system with the refrigerant. A cooling plant is connected to the line system to receive the frozen seawater. The cooling plant comprises a separation tank for separating the frozen portion of seawater from brine, and a heat exchanger to cool the process by heat exchange with the frozen seawater.

Modified resins are disclosed for removing a wide variety of solids and/or ionic species from the liquids in which they are suspended and/or dissolved. These modified resins are especially useful as froth flotation depressants in the beneficiation of many types of materials (e.g., mineral and metal ores), including the beneficiation of impure coal comprising clay impurities, as well as in the separation of valuable bitumen from solid contaminants such as sand. The modified resins are also useful for treating aqueous liquid suspensions to remove solid particulates, as well as for removing metallic ions in the purification of water. The modified resins comprise a base resin that is modified with a coupling agent, which is highly selective for binding to solid contaminants and especially siliceous materials such as sand or clay.

The invention relates to a method and a system for utilising waste that contains fibres and combustible material. Waste is slushed in a continuous-operation high-consistency pulper (10) to suspend in water the fibres contained in the waste, and from the pulper (10) are discharged substantially continuously fibre suspension (P1) through a screen plate and non-defibrable material (R1) by means of a mechanical transfer device (22). The fibre suspension (P1) is sorted and cleaned for use as raw material in paper or board. The non-defibrable material (R1) and the rejects (R2-R4) separated from the fibre suspension (P1) in the sorting and cleaning stages are used as fuel in energy production and/or utilised as raw material.

An improved method and apparatus for extracting resin from plant material. Conventionally, plant resins, which are useful in many products, are extracted using chemical solvents, which may alter the extract, and may produce a byproduct or residue that may be unusable or problematic. The present invention overcomes these drawbacks by using cold water in a wash process to cause the resins to become brittle, while the remaining plant material becomes more flexible. Separation is accomplished using an extractor (10) having a washing chamber (12) with an open top (14) and a screen filter (16) disposed above a settling chamber (18). A collection bottle (24) is placed below a valve (22), and may include a filter (26) to separate resin particles from the solute. The washing chamber is first filled with cold water and then a quantity of plant material (P) is placed therein, followed by an ice layer (30). An agitator (32) is then actuated to mix the contents to separate the resins. The settled resin is thereafter captured by the filter (26) upon opening the valve (22).

A system (10) is provided for treating a mixture (12) containing desired materials (14) and contaminating plastic materials (16) for separation at a subsequent material processing stage. The system (10) comprises a treatment station (18), guiding means (24, 25, 30) for guiding the mixture (12) into the treatment station (18), and heating means (20) for heating a fluid medium flowing in said treatment station (18). The heating means (20) is arranged so that the mixture (12) at said treatment station (18) is heated to a temperature within a predetermined temperature range below melting points of the plastic materials. When heated to that temperature and exposed in the treatment station (18) within a predetermined time period the contaminating plastic materials (16) change their physical characteristics to a form allowing separation a the subsequent material processing stage. The system is particularly useful for removing plastic fibers from natural fibers such as wool, cotton or silk.
