A process and device are disclosed for removing sand from water loaded with sand and organic substances. The water is made to swirl in a standing container, so that the organic substances are moved upwards to an overflow (13) whereas the sand sinks downwards to a discharging conveyor (3) connected to the bottom of the container and is only discharged after a settling time. In order to achieve a substantial separation of sand and organic substances, the settled sand is agitated by an agitator mechanism (4) at the same time as it is rinsed with fresh water supplied to the bottom area of the container (1) and is only discharged in an amount such that a predetermined minimum height of the settled sand (18) is ensured.

The apparatus is in the form of a vertically elongated vessel of high height to diameter ratio having a cylindrical upper section (10) and a bottom section (12) and arranged to be filled to a predetermined liquid level (13) in an upper region of said cylindrical section; feed means (17) for feeding a suspension into the cylindrical section in a mid-region between the bottom of the vessel and said liquid level, said feed means including means for injecting the feed under a positive pressure sufficient to overcome the hydrostatic head of the liquid in the vessel above the feed inlet; means (20) for adding a flocculant to the suspension feed; liquid outlet means (14) in an upper region of the cylindrical section at or below said liquid level for drawing off clarified liquid; solids discharge means (30) at the bottom of said vessel; means (22, 23) for controlling a slurry-clarified liquid interface at a predetermined level in a lower region of said cylindrical portion below the feed inlet and rotatable rake means (24) in the bottom section adapted to remold the sedimented solids and continuously expose renewed surfaces. Provided is a solid-liquid-separation processing method in which solids in a slurry are separated and removed by applying multistage washing to the slurry, in which, even in the case where the number of connected thickening-apparatus stages is smaller, the clarity of obtained supernatant liquid can be improved. In the solid-liquid-separation processing method in which thickening apparatuses each equipped with an agitation tank and a sedimentation tank having an overflow unit in a peripheral portion thereof to discharge supernatant liquid and a cylindrical feed well vertically arranged at a central portion thereof are provided in multiple stages, and multistage washing is applied to a slurry to separate solids in the slurry therefrom and obtain a solution from which the solids are removed, when a flocculant configured to flocculate the solids in the slurry is added, a predetermined proportion of the flocculant is added to a feed well in a first-stage thickening apparatus, and the remainder of the flocculant is added to an overflow unit in a second-stage thickening apparatus.
