The invention concerns a membrane for selective gas separation. The membrane consists of an ethylene oxide copolymer or a polymeric material obtained by crosslinking such a copolymer. Said copolymer is characterised in that it consists of at least 30 % in number of -CH2CH2O- units derived from ethylene oxide, and at least 2 % in number of -CHR-CH2O- units derived from an oxirane bearing a crosslinkable substituent R and/or of -CHR1-CH2O- units derived from an oxirane bearing a non-crosslinkable substituent R1. The membranes are particularly useful for separating hydrophilic gases contained in a gas mixture.

A process for preparing a polyether ether ketone membrane usable as ultrafilter or microfilter at high temperature. This process comprises dissolving a polyether ether ketone in a solvent, casting the resulting stock solution for membrane formation into a desired shape, and bringing the cast material into contact with a solidifying medium for polyether ether ketone to form a non-sulfonated polyether ether ketone membrane, and is characterized in that concentrated sulfuric acid is used as the solvent and the stock solution is kept at a temperature of 15 °C or below until the beginning of membrane formation.

A method is provided for making crosslinked acidic polymers useful as ion conductive membranes, such as crosslinked sulfonated polyether ketones, sulfonated polysulfones, sulfonated polystyrenes, and other acidic polymers, by crosslinking with a species which generates an acidic functionality. The crosslinker preferably binds to acid functions by conversion of acid groups to imide functinality, which, due to the acidity of the N-H bonds therein, compensate for the acidity lost by the occupation of the acid groups and thus preserve membrane conductivity while contributing to membrane strength and resistance to swelling.

In this process for manufacturing a non-sulfonated PEEK membrane which comprises dissolving PEEK in a solvent to obtain a membrane forming stock solution, forming the stock solution into a desired shape and bringing the formed stock solution in contact with a coagulating liquid capable of coagulating PEEK, the key features involve using concentrated sulfuric acid as the solvent, dissolving PEEK therein to prepare the stock solution and keeping the stock solution at 15 degrees C or lower until initiation of membrane formation.
