The underlying invention generally relates to the field of coherent modulator architectures for the processing of modulated RF signals of digital communication systems, especially to a processing unit realizing an effective I/Q imbalance correction for high-level modulation schemes, e.g. 16-QAM or 64-QAM, under the coexistence of a carrier frequency error ( Δf RF ). According to one embodiment of the underlying invention, an I/Q modulator of a quadrature transmitter comprising a processing unit (302) for correcting the amplitude and phase of the I and Q signals by calculating calibration coefficients (h(M)) is applied, wherein the processing unit (302) is specially designed to carry out the following steps in order to calculate said calibration coefficients ( h ( M )): a) using a number of M signal samples in order to calculate initial calibration coefficients ( h k ( M )), wherein M is an integer value which is larger than 1, and b) calculating averaged calibration coefficients ( h ( M )) by averaging a plurality of said initial calibration coefficients ( h k ( M )) obtained by repeating step a) for a limited number of K repetitions, wherein K denotes an integer larger than 1. The averaged calibration coefficients ( h ( M )) are then used to correct the I and Q imbalance.

A stereo demultiplexer is proposed which can be calculation power efficiently implemented in a DSP. Modern digital FM receivers exploit the information content in the in quadrature component of the modulated difference signal for a noise reduction. The proposed stereo demultiplexer derives the in phase component and the in quadrature component of the difference signal with a minimized number of sinus and cosinus calculations by first downconverting the modulated difference signal to a not synchronized complex baseband signal on basis of a fixed frequency, thereafter a complex sampling rate decimation unit sampling rate decimates the not synchronized complex baseband signal with a factor N and a second complex mixer synchronizes and coherent demodulates the sampling rate decimated not synchronized baseband signal on basis of a first complex carrier signal derived on basis of the pilot carrier signal and the fixed frequency. The proposed stereo demultiplexer can easily be combined with a noise reduction system and the digital demodulation of the RDS and ARI signals.

The transmission characteristics of subcarriers of a multicarrier transmission system (OFDM) using a plurality of antenna elements (antenna diversity) (3,3') can be adjusted. Particularly the power and the phase of the subcarriers can be adapted. To this object the subcarrier frequency channel (2,2') characteristics of the multicarrier transmission are detected (11,11') at the side of the transmitter (3). The power of each subcarrier is then distributed by a weighting unit (14,14'). The subcarriers can be further pre-equalized (1,1') by dividing the subcarrier signal respectively by the sum of the squared magnitude of the frequency channel characteristics of all subcarrier signals or a frequency characteristic of the selected antenna element (3,3').

A method for improving the sharpness of pictures contained in a video signal comprises the steps of: a) processing said pictures on the basis of a step/edge enhancement algorithm to obtain step/edge enhanced pictures, b) processing said pictures on the basis of a texture enhancement algorithm to obtain texture enhanced pictures, and mixing said step/edge enhanced pictures with said texture enhanced pictures to obtain a video signal containing sharpness-improved pictures, wherein steps a) and b) are performed in dependence of motion information being related to said pictures.
