The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a disposable board drinking cup ( 10 ) and to the cup produced by the method. The cup is manufactured by folding a board blank between the cup mantle ( 5 ) and the collar ( 6 ), by bending and seaming the folded blank into a cone, the folding point forming the cup mouth ( 8 ), and by providing the thus seamed blank with a bottom. The cup thus formed comprises both a mantle ( 5 ) and a collar ( 6 ) bent downwardly from the cup mouth ( 8 ) and acting as a grip surface, making it easier to enjoy especially a hot drink from the cup. The shape of the cup mantle ( 5 ) and the collar ( 6 ) may be conically expanding, allowing the cups to be nested. The lower edge of the collar ( 6 ) can be equipped with a projection ( 12 ) for maintaining an air slot between the collar and the cup mantle.

The invention relates to a digital printing method and a paper or board applicable thereto. In digital printing, the surface of a paper or board is charged electrically, toner particles are brought to the surface in an electric field in accordance with the printing, and the particles are melted fast to the surface with the help of heat for forming the printing. According to the invention, the paper or board (2) is provided with a coating layer (3) containing an electrically chargeable acrylate copolymer of ethylene, which receives the toner that is fused to the coating with the help of infrared radiation. Suitable coating polymers are especially methyl, ethyl and butyl acrylate copolymers of ethylene (EMA, EEA and EBA). Especially in packaging boards, besides the digitally printable layer, the polymer coatings can comprise a water vapour or oxygen barrier layer for protecting the packed product, and a heat-sealable layer on the opposite side of the board for sealing the package.

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a shaped tray or plate of fibrous material. The method comprises the steps of (i) providing a fibrous pulp, in which the fibres substantially consist of at least 85 wt-% of softwood fibres having an average fibre length of at least 2.0 mm and at most 15 wt-% of broke having a fibre length of about 0.05 mm to 1.0 mm, (ii) turning the pulp into a foamed suspension, (iii) supplying the foamed suspension from a headbox to a forming fabric of a board machine to form a fibrous web, (iv) drying the web to obtain a dried web having a compressibility in the thickness direction of at least 20%, and (v) including the web as a layer in a board, which is turned to said tray or plate by thermopressing or deep-drawing. The invention even covers shaped trays and plates produced by use of the method.

The invention relates to a method of treating chemical pulp fibers by a polymerizing hydroxy acid, the fibers thus obtained and the products refined from them. In the method, the hydroxy acid reacts with the reactive groups of the fibers in the presence of a catalyst, forming ester bonds. The following units of the same hydroxy acid are oligomerized and/or polymerized to these grafted acid residues. The fibers thus treated and the products refined thereof endure better processing stages that include drawing and stretching than untreated fibers.

The invention relates to use of polylactide (PLA) as an extruded polymer coating on paper or board intended for the production of containers and packages, which are heated in a stove or microwave oven. According to the invention a polyfunctional cross-linking agent, such as trialkyl isocyanureate (TAIC), is blended with PLA, and the extruded coating layer is subjected to cross-linking electron beam (EB) radiation. PLA may be used as such or blended with another biodegradable polyester such as polybutylene succinate (PBS). EB radiation has been found to improve adhesion of the coating to the paper or board substrate, heat-scalability of the coating, and heat-resistance of the finished containers and packages.

The invention relates to methods for lowering the melt viscosity and thereby improving heat-sealability of a polyester. The invention also relates to a method for manufacturing a heat-sealed container or package from fibrous-based, polyester-coated packaging material, and a method for heat-sealing polyester. The solution according to the invention is subjecting polyester to electron beam (EB) radiation. The lowered melt viscosity allows a lower heat-sealing temperature, and permits sealing of polyester to an uncoated fibrous surface. The preferred polyester for the invention is polylactide, as such or as blended with another polyester.
