In a digital tape recording system for video and sound signals, in which information in each track is stored in plural sectors having synchronizing preambles that aid in synchronizing the playback of the information, special preambles containing a frequency component that is lower than normal are used for the first sector of the first track in each video frame or field. The normal and special preambles are produced by passing the binary code "...01010101..." (in the case of all but the first sector of each frame or field) or "...011011011011..." (in the case of the first sector) through a Miller Channel Code encoder to produce, in the first case, a synchronizing square wave fluctuating at one-fourth the bit presentation frequency, and in the second case, a synchronizing quare wave fluctuating at one-sixth the bit presentation frequency. Special resonant circuits associated with the playback circuitry detect the special lower frequency component and signal the precise start of a new frame or field. This signal is used for capstan synchronization, head positioning during playback, and head positioning during editing when the record, heads are used as playback heads so that they may be properly positioned to overwrite individual sectors on a track without overwriting other sectors.

A method and apparatus for the generation of a signal flag in response to illegal channel code patterns from an information channel. The signal flag may typically be used as an erasure flag by a subsequent error correction decoder. This erasure flag is indicative of a data error position which can then be fed into a utilization circuit such as an error correction logic for performance improvement. In particular, a Miller-squared channel code format decoder in accordance with the present invention can provide error position information, thereby enhancing error correction power, such as that of a Reed-Solomon error correction code.

The invention provides techniques for changing the quantization used in multiple generations of data quantization such that the errors incurred in subsequent generations are substantially the same as the error incurred in the first generations even though the complexity of the data has been changed. In a preferred embodiment, quantizing factors are selected from a preselected finite non-degenerative set of quantizing factors provided in the form of arrays of a periodic series of individual quantizer values, wherein a special numerical relationship is maintained between corresponding quantizer values in successive arrays. A different quantizing factor may be selected for each generation of compression/decompression as required by changing data complexity as when performing a layering process during the generations. In another embodiment, an over-quantizing factor is chosen large enough to compress the data to a greater extent than that required in the first generation, such that sufficient compression still is provided in subsequent generations even though the same quantizing factor is used while the complexity of the data is being changed. If for some reason the complexity of the data changes faster than expected, it is necessary to change the quantizing factor to fit the data into the allotted space. To moderate the associated increase in noise, the invention technique incudes a dither rounding process wherein a psuedo random number sequence in the range of 0...1.0 is selectively added as determined by a threshold. The invention also includes estimating a quantizing factor applied in a previous generation of image recording if this information is not available explicitly, by distinguishing the peaks and/or valleys of histogram. The amplitudes of the peaks and/or valleys represent the number of counts of the respective values of frequency coefficients to be quantized.

A key processing system (80) receives an input key signal to define a portion of the image selected for viewing. It operates in parallel with the image processing system to generate an output key signal which has undergone the same selected spatial transformation relative to the input key signal as did the image. A spatial transformation system (26,800,900) operates on the input image signal so as to be able to spatially transform the input image signal on a folded curved surface. The spatial transformation system can be arranged as a separable, two pass transformation process and functions either with h-pass first operations, followed by v-pass operations or vice versa.

The decision feedback decoder of the invention receives sequentially sampled values of a signal waveform corresponding to data bits transmitted by a channel. A magnitude comparator (16) compares the sampled values to a threshold and based on each comparison it provides subsequent decisions determining the values of the corresponding data bits. A predetermined number of previous decisions is stored and applied to first and second threshold adjustment circuits (26,28). Each circuit adjusts the threshold depending on the respective values of the previous decisions, while the first circuit provides the adjustment based on an assumption that the next decision to be made will have a first signal value and the second circuit provides the adjustment based on an assumption that the next decision will have a second signal value. When that next decision becomes available, it is utilized to select the correct adjusted threshold value for the next comparison by the magnitude comparator.

To equalize the information content of image data prior to compression, a shuffling and deshuffling technique divides the video image into a multitude of image blocks, and selects a predetermined number of the image blocks from different spatial locations in the image, to form a succession of data sets representative of the video image information. The selection of the image representing blocks is such that the information content in each data set is similar to the information content in each other data set and similar to the average information content of the entire video image.
