A patient care system in which a physiological parameter of a patient is monitored while the patient self-administers analgesic. A display presents a trend of the patient's physiological parameter along with the time of self-administration of the analgesic ("PCA"-patient controlled analgesic) such that the effect of the analgesic on the physiological parameter can be seen over selectable time periods. The physiological parameter may be ETCO 2 or SpO 2 or other. Also included is a drug library having acceptable pumping parameters as well as other PCA specific data. Should the operator program a pumping parameter that is outside an acceptable range, or should the patient attempt to self-administer more analgesic than the acceptable range permits, or should a patient's physiological parameter change during infusion such that a pumping parameter becomes outside an acceptable range, an indication of such will be given and action, such as stopping the pump, will be taken.

Therein, a plurality of module connectors (10) is provided, via each of which the base module (1, 1') is connectable with an external control module (2), wherein each of the module connectors (10) provides a module interface, wherein the base module (1, 1') is adapted to receive control information from a control module (2) via the module interface provided by the module connector (10) the control module (2) is connected to and to control at least one infusion pump (14,3) connected with the base module (1, 1') in dependence on the received control information, which derives from patient parameter sensors (25) connected to the respective control modules. In this way a base module is provided which allows to perform a plurality of infusion control functions via different connected control modules. A communication test method between control and base module is also disclosed.

The characteristic determining device (10) comprises a determining device housing (13) adapted to be carried by the user; a receptacle (11) coupled to the determining device housing (13) for receiving and testing an analyte from the user to determine the concentration of the analyte in the user; a determining device processor (17) contained in the determining device housing (13) and coupled to the receptacle (11) for processing the determined concentration of the analyte from the receptacle (11); and a determining device communication system (15) contained in the determining device housing (13) and coupled to the determining device processor (17) for transmitting a communication including data indicative of the determined concentration of the analyte in the user to the infusion device (50); wherein the determining device processor (17) has unique identifying information, and the communication transmitted by the determining device communication system (15) to the infusion device (50) further includes the unique identifying information of the determining device processor (17) such that the infusion device is capable of discerning whether the communication is intended for receipt by the infusion device.
