The present invention discloses a security element comprising a transparent substrate and a magnetically oriented image coating on said substrate, wherein said image coating is preferably laid out such as to show a 3-dimensional effect, appearing in positive or negative relief respectively, if observed form the recto- or the verso side, respectively. The security element can be easily identified by the unaided eye, by just turning around the document and observing the angle-dependent image on either side. On the other hand, the security element cannot be reproduced by scanning or copying the document.

A device and method of forming a device in the form of an image particularly useful as a security device is disclosed wherein a magnetically aligned pigment coating upon a release layer on a first substrate on which it is coated is stamped, or example hot stamped onto another substrate or object. Multiple stamped aligned regions can be oriented differently on the other substrate or object in the form of a patch work or mosaic. For example a region of stamped aligned flakes having the flakes oriented in a North-South orientation can be stamped onto one region of an object or substrate and another region of stamped same flakes removed from a same substrate can be stamped onto a same object oriented in an E-W orientation. By first aligning and curing flakes onto a releasable substrate, these flakes can be stamped in various shapes and sizes of patches to be adhesively fixed to another substrate or object.

A security device is disclosed that has an image formed upon a substrate (1, 1b). The image has a first printed region (3, 3b) and a second different printed region (2, 2b) both printed with a same ink formulation of field alignable flakes (4b). At least one of the printed regions (2, 2b, 3, 3b) has optically variable effects. One of the first and second printed regions (2, 2b, 3, 3b) at least partially surrounds the other. The second printed region (2, 2b) is formed of thin parallel lines and the first printed region (3, 3b) has substantially wider lines than are printed in the second printed region (2, 2b). The area density of the ink in a line in the first group of wider lines is greater than the area density of a line in the second group of narrower lines. A surprising effect of this image is that particles or flakes (4b) in the ink are field aligned so as to produce a visible kinematic dynamic effect visible in the first region (3, 3b) and not visible in the second region (2, 2b) when the image is tilted or rotated.

The interference structure further comprises an insulator layer over the magnetic layer and the reflector layer is disposed over the insulator layer. The insulator layer has a thickness for preventing corrosion of the interference structure.

The proposed tape data carrier for protecting articles and documents from counterfeiting and copying is formed by a polymer structure (21) consisting of at least one polymer layer of which at least one layer has through-perforations (24) and/or pits (25). These surface perforations and pits are between 0.001 and 20 νm in size and can be filled with different materials. The data carriers can carry concealed and visible macro- and micro-images created by heavy-ion bombardment of the polymer film, subsequent exposure of the bombarded film to ultraviolet radiation and etching of the polymer film in a solvent. The proposed device for manufacturing a data carrier of this type comprises the following elements configured in series: a heavy ion source (36); a heavy ion beam-formation system (37); an ion guide (38); a three-dimensional amplitude modulation unit (41); and a target (40) which is destined to become the data carrier. The three-dimensional amplitude modulation unit (41) is designed as a matrix (42) of wafers (43) and is connected to a drive for rotating and/or translating the wafers (44). The drive is connected via the control unit (46) to the unit for displacing the target (45).
