The invention concerns a method for the production of matt paint surfaces, the method calling for a first paint coat with a first thickness to be applied first, and subsequently at least a second paint coat to be applied over the first, at least the last coat to be applied including dulling agents and having a dry-film thickness which is less than the average particle size of the dulling agents. The method is characterized in that the paint coats applied are cured by ionizing radiation.

A process is provided whereby radiation curable compositions comprising N-vinylformamide and an oligomer selected from the group consisting of epoxy-acrylate resins, polyester acrylate resins, polyurethane acrylate resins, acrylic acrylate resins, silicone acrylate resins, unsaturated polyester resins, maleate ester resins, vinyl ether resins and mixtures thereof are applied to the surface of a substrate and subsequently exposed to a radiation source until an adherent dry polymerized film is formed on the substrate. These compositions are useful for a wide range of applications including pigmented and unpigmented coatings, printing inks, adhesives and the like.

Disclosed is an ink composition comprising an aqueous liquid vehicle and pigment particles having attached to the surfaces thereof a polymerized vinyl aromatic salt. In one embodiment, the polymeric vinyl aromatic salt is chemically grafted to the surfaces of the pigment particles; in another embodiment, the polymeric vinyl aromatic salt is adsorbed onto the surfaces of the pigment particles. Preferably, the modified pigment particles have an average particle diameter of less than about 1 micron. The ink composition is suitable for applications such as ink jet printing processes, particularly thermal ink jet printing processes. Images generated with ink compositions of the present invention are sharp, waterfast, lightfast, and of high optical density, exhibiting no feathering, and can be electrically conductive.

The invention relates to powder compositions hardenable by radiation usable for preparing paints and varnishes. These powder compositions contain an ethylenically unsaturated resin, a phosphorous containing compound and, eventually, a monomer or oligomer. The powder compositions of the invention are especially suited for coating over metal and combine upon melting at low temperatures and curing by radiation a series of properties such as good flow and film flexibility along with an outstanding adhesion to the substrate.

The invention relates to a synthetic resin, based on partly cross-linked poly(meth)acrylate-urethane-(meth)acrylates in urethane(meth)acrylates, obtained by: (a) preparation of (meth)acrylate monomers (I), which have no groups reactive to isocyanate groups and (meth)acrylate monomers (II), with (a) group(s) reactive to isocyanate groups, (b) polymerisation of the (meth)acrylate monomers (I) and (II) to give a poly(meth)acrylate (III), with groups reactive to isocyanate groups, (c) reaction of the poly(meth)acrylate (III) with an isocyanate compound (IV), with more than one isocyanate group, in such a manner that 5 to 40 % of the isocyanate groups of the isocyanate compound (IV) react with the above groups reactive to isocyanate groups, whereby partial cross-linking of (III) with an increase in weight average molecular weight by a factor of 2 to 20 occurs, in which one given (IV) reacts with more than one of the isocyanate groups thereof with more than one given (III) and (d) reaction of the compound obtained in (c) with (meth)acrylate monomers (II). The synthetic resin can be used as a binder, for example, in a radical-hardening composition, suitable for application in production of composite materials, composite workpieces, and paints with advantageous physical and chemical properties.
