A method for treating a substrate is described. In accordance with one aspect, the method includes applying a polymer coating to a substrate, and bringing the polymer coating into contact with a heated surface in a pressure nip while the coating is still in a wet state. Optionally the polymer coating may include a crosslinkable material, and a crosslinking agent may be used to promote crosslinking. The polymer coating replicates the heated surface. A product produced in accordance with the described method is also disclosed. The product is characterized by having subsurface voids within the coating.

A diffuse reflecting optical construction (1) that does not rely on special molds or tooling of the prior art in order to create a critical diffuse reflecting surface feature of the optical construction. An atomized spray method is employed to apply a hardenable transparent liquid polymer layer to the surface of a prefabricated base optical substrate (2). The polymer layer forms beads on the surface of the prefabricated base optical substrate (2), resulting in the formation of a surface having a random and continuous series of peaks and valleys (4) thereon that form the diffuse reflecting polymer layer (3). The prefabricated base optical substrate (2) having the diffuse reflecting polymer layer (3) thereon combined with additional optical layers (5, 6) forms a transparent diffuse reflecting optical construction (1) that can be used in the manufacture of optical lenses, windows, and transparent films that reflect light in a diffuse manner while transmitting light in a substantially undistorted manner.

The plurality of solid particles and the impregnating liquid collectively form a liquid-impregnated surface. The impregnating liquid can be applied after the solid particle suspension is applied, or the solid particle suspension can include the impregnating liquid, such that the solid particle suspension and the impregnating liquid are concurrently spray-deposited onto the surface.
