Abstract:
The instant invention provides carbamate functional polymers and/or oligomers and coating compositions containing such which have improved levels of nonvolatile solids yet demonstrate good sprayability and etch resistance. The carbamate functional polymers and/or oligomers of the invention comprise the polymerization reaction product of (a) a polymer or oligomer comprising a plurality of functional groups reactive with an active hydrogen group, and (b) a monomeric compound of the formula: wherein at least one of Y and Z is an active hydrogen containing group and the other is a primary carbamate group, and R is of the formula:-(L)n-R' wherein L is a linking group of one or more carbons containing heteratoms selected from the group consisting of O,N, andmixtures thereof, R' is an alkyl group free of heteratoms and selected from the group consisting of branched alkyl groups having from 5 to 30 carbons, straight chain alkyl groups of more than 2 carbons, and mixtures thereof, and n is a number from 0 to 1.

The invention provides a powder slurry composition having a particulate component (a) dispersed in a liquid component (b). Component (a) comprises a solid or particulate compound (i) comprising the reaction product of a polyisocyanate (A) and a compound (B). Polyisocyanate (A) is of the formula [R(NCO)y]x, where x = 1 or higher, y = 2 or higher, and R has Cn symmetry when n = 2 or higher. Compound (B) comprises both an isocyanate-reactive group and a functional group selected from the group consisting of a carbamate group and groups convertible to a carbamate group after reaction of compound (B) with polyisocyanate (A). One or both of component (a) and (b) comprise a crosslinking agent (ii) reactive with particulate compound (i).

The β-hydroxy carbamate, ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the invention can be polymerized as a homopolymer or copolymerized with other monomers. The polymerization can be carried out in an aqueous medium. The β-hydroxy carbamate monomer is polymerized to form water-soluble homopolymers or, if polymerized as a mixture with one or more comonomers, copolymers that are soluble, emulsifiable, or dispersible in water. The β-hydroxy carbamate monomer can be used as a replacement monomer for acrylamide.

The invention pertains to a coating composition comprising a compound comprising at least one bicyclo-orthoester group and at least one other functional group. The invention also comprises a process for curing the present coating composition. Further, a process for making a bicyclo-orthoester-functional compound from the corresponding oxetane compound is described.
