Disclosed herein are aminoplast resin-based coating compositions that provide formable, abrasion-resistant, and weatherable coatings when cured on the substrate. The coating compositions comprise an aminoplast resin; a curing catalyst; a first polyol having an average molecular weight greater than 300; a second polyol having an average molecular weight less than or equal to 300; and at least 5% by weight solids of at least two 2-hydroxyphenol benzotriazole (HPBT)-containing compounds based on the total solids of the coating composition. Also disclosed herein are articles comprising coatings cured from such coating compositions.

The instant invention provides a crosslinkable aqueous composition, method of producing the same, crosslinked compositions, and method of producing the same. The crosslinkable composition comprising: an aqueous dispersion comprising; (a) water; (b) a polycarbamate comprising at least an average of 2.0 carbamate functional groups; (c) a polyaldehyde comprising at least two aldehyde groups; (d) an acid catalyst; and (e) optionally one or more surfactants; wherein said aqueous dispersion has a pH in the range of less than 7; and wherein said composition is capable of being crosslinked at a temperature in range of less than 80° C upon substantial removal of water.

The reduced molecular weight aminoplasts are obtained by reacting (a) an aminoplast compound, having a total number (y) of reactive substituents on the amino nitrogens of the aminoplast, where y= (E x M) and E = equivalents per mole of aminoplast and M= total number of moles of aminoplast, wherein the reactive substituents are selected from the group consisting of -NH, alkylol, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, and mixtures thereof and (b) at least one carbamate compound selected from the group consisting of unsubstituted and substituted primary carbamate compounds, unsubstituted and substituted secondary carbamate compounds and mixtures thereof, in the presence of primary or secondary alcohols, at temperatures under 150 DEG C, and at pressures ranging between atmospheric pressure and 20 atm pressure, to form a functionalized aminoplast compound, wherein at least one and up to (y-1) of the amino substituents on the aminoplast are substituted with the carbamate functionality.
