The oxygen output from the air fractionation unit (25) is connected to the burner of the combustion chamber (8) by means of an oxygen line (26).

In an integrated process for the compression, cooling, and purification of air, an adiabatic compressor (1) compresses an air stream (2) to produce a compresse air stream. The compressed air stream is used (3) to warm a first pressurized stream (37) at a first pressure and a second pressurized stream (39) at a second pressure. The produced streams include a first warmed pressurized stream (7), a second warmed pressurized stream (9), and a cooled compressed air stream (4). The first warmed pressurized stream is gaseous and is expanded in a turbine (11). At least part of the work produced by the turbine is used to power the adiabatic compressor. The cooled compressed air stream is further cooled by a cooling unit by heat exchange (5) with water (15,17), and then purified in a purifying unit (8) using a TSA process. At least part of the warmed second pressurized stream (9B,9C) is used in cooling (31) the water to be used in the cooling process and/or in warming (43) the gas (45) used to regenerate purifying unit.

The two compartments are separated by a barrier (21), which allows for upward passage of air, but prevents the downward passage of liquid. The invention concerns a method for driving at least a compression machine (7, 8) of an air distillation unit (3) which supplies oxygen and/or nitrogen and/or argon to an industrial plant (1) producing water vapour. In normal running conditions, the compression machine is driven at least partly by a steam turbine (13) fed with said water vapour, which is input at an input port (15) of the turbine. The turbine has two input ports (15, 16) which correspond to different intake pressures. During at least one operating phase of said plant (1), the turbine is partly supplied with water vapour from an auxiliary water vapour source (21) and input at the turbine other input port (16). The invention is useful for supplying air gas to a synthetic hydrocarbon production plant.

The invention provides an improvement in the utilization of hydrocarbon feedstock by partial oxidation with oxygen to form a synthesis gas comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen and subjecting the synthesis gas to a conversion process comprising an exothermic reaction. The oxygen is provided by air separation in which the feed air is at least partially compressed by work generated by expansion of a working fluid vaporized by indirect heat exchange with at least one of the synthesis gas and the exothermic reaction. The improvement is that the working fluid is preheated by indirect heat exchange with adiabatically compressed feed air, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the process and reducing capital costs compared with conventional generally isothermal feed air compression. Preferably, the gas conversion process is a catalytic hydrogenation to prepare paraffinic hydrocarbons (Fischer-Tropsch reaction), methanol or dimethylether.
