The method and the device serve to produce oxygen by the low-temperature separation of air at variable energy consumption. A distillation column system comprises a high-pressure column (34), a low-pressure column (35) and a main condenser (36), a secondary condenser (26) and a supplementary condenser (37). Gaseous nitrogen (41, 42) from the high-pressure column (34) is liquefied in the main condenser (36) in indirect heat exchange with an intermediate liquid (43) from the low-pressure column (35). A first liquid oxygen stream (70) from the bottom of the low-pressure column (35) is evaporated in the secondary condenser (26) in indirect heat exchange with feed air (25b) to obtain a gaseous oxygen product (72). The supplementary condenser serves as a bottom heating device for the low-pressure column (35) and is heated by means of a first nitrogen stream (44) from the distillation column system, which nitrogen stream was compressed previously in a cold compressor (45). In a second operating mode of lower energy consumption, less feed air (1) is compressed in the main air compressor (3) of the installation to a lower pressure compared to a first operating mode of higher energy consumption, less liquid oxygen (70) from the low-pressure column (35) is passed into the secondary condenser (26) and more nitrogen is compressed in the cold compressor (45). Furthermore, in the second operating mode, a second liquid oxygen stream (73) is additionally passed into the secondary condenser (26).

The invention concerns a method (11) whereby a nitrogen-enriched stream (11) of an air separating apparatus (10) under pressure is sent, optionally after being compressed, to a combustion chamber (15) where it is heated, to a turbine (17) wherein it is expanded and again to the combustion chamber (15) where it is mixed with fumes to yield waste heat.
Oxygen (69) is produced in an integrated gas turbine-driven air separation process in which heat of compression (3) is recovered from a portion (39) of the compressed air feed (1) for the air separation process (53) by heat transfer (41,49) with the nitrogen-rich product stream (55) from the air separation process (53), and the heated nitrogen-rich product stream (44) is utilized (21) to generate steam (11). This steam (11) is used to provide a portion of the work to drive the feed air compressor (3), either by expansion with combustion products (13) in the gas turbine expander (17) or by expansion in a separate steam turbine (78). The process is useful for oxygen production in remote locations where low-cost fuel is readily available and moderate energy efficiency is acceptable, but where capital equipment costs are high and operating complexity is undesirable.

Oxygen (74) is provided to a process for the conversion of natural gas to produce higher molecular weight hydrocarbon products by an air separation process (60) in which the feed air (54) is compressed to between 8 and 20 Bar (a) by a compressor (52) at least partially driven by expansion (20) excess steam (10) generated by the conversion process.
