Disclosed is a method for producing at least one gas having a low CO 2 concentration and one or more primary fluids having a high CO 2 concentration from a fluid which is to be treated and contains CO 2 and at least one compound that is more volatile than CO 2 . Said method comprises the following steps: a) the fluid to be treated is subjected to a first cooling process using heat exchange without the fluid undergoing a change of state; b) at least some of the fluid to be treated and cooled in step a) is cooled a second time such that a solid is obtained which contains mainly CO 2 and at least the gas having a low CO 2 concentration; and c) a step in which at least some of said solid is liquefied and/or sublimed such that the one or more primary fluids having a high CO 2 concentration are obtained. The disclosed method is characterized in that at least some of the cold required for the first cooling process and/or the second cooling process is supplied by one or more refrigeration cycles, each of which includes at least one quasi isentropic expansion of a gas.

The invention concerns a method for driving at least a compression machine (7, 8) of an air distillation unit (3) which supplies oxygen and/or nitrogen and/or argon to an industrial plant (1) producing water vapour. In normal running conditions, the compression machine is driven at least partly by a steam turbine (13) fed with said water vapour, which is input at an input port (15) of the turbine. The turbine has two input ports (15, 16) which correspond to different intake pressures. During at least one operating phase of said plant (1), the turbine is partly supplied with water vapour from an auxiliary water vapour source (21) and input at the turbine other input port (16). The invention is useful for supplying air gas to a synthetic hydrocarbon production plant.

A back-up quantity of a "first" gas is supplied temporarily to maintain the level of production of the first gas from a cryogenic separation of a gaseous mixture comprising the first gas and at least one other gas in the event of reduction in the level of production of said first gas from the separation. The separation comprises separating the mixture, or a mixture derived therefrom, in at least one cryogenic distillation system (2,4) to produce liquefied first gas, the or each system retaining a portion of said liquefied first gas as inventory (22) and vaporising a further portion of said liquefied first gas by indirect heat exchange (28) against a process stream (30) in at least one heat exchanger (28) to produce said first gas. In the event of reduction in the level of production of said first gas from the separation, liquefied first gas inventory is withdrawn from the or at least one of said cryogenic distillation systems and vaporised to produce said back-up quantity of first gas. The invention has particular application to the production of gaseous oxygen ("GOX") from the separation of air.
