A measuring apparatus for measuring flow, such as liquid or gas flow, and/or its characteristics. The apparatus comprises a housing (1) provided with a flow channel (2) and a tubular member fitted thereinto, and inside the tubular member there are coaxially installed a flow control member (12) and thereafter, in the flowing direction, a rotor (10), or a combination of the two. The housing (1) is provided at least with a rotor revmeter (3) and connecting means for connecting the measuring apparatus into the flow circuit. According to the invention, the tubular member is formed as a replacement piece (7) which is provided with members (10, 12) installed thereinto. The replacement piece can be alternatively replaced according to the needs, for instance in the case of malfunction, or according to the specific measuring purposes, either by a new replacement piece or by another, different replacement piece, whereinto there are installed at least the said flow control member and the rotor, or a combination of the two.

A turbine flow meter (1) of the kind in which a bladed rotor (14, 53) is rotated by the flow about an axis lying in the general direction of the flow. The length of the blades (13, 54) does not exceed 0.3 of the radius to the blade tips, each blade being twisted over its length in proportion to its radius. The maximum twist is such that at no point is the angle relative to the rotational axis greater than fifteen degrees. No visible clear path exists through the area of the blades for the fluid. A force transducer (56, 57, 63) is mounted in the fluid flow path to enable a measurement of momentum to be provided so that in conjunction with a measure of the speed of rotation of the rotor, the mass flow rate of the fluid can be deduced.

A fluid flow rate meter, in particular a liquid flow rate meter, such as a fuel consumption meter for a motor vehicle. The meter comprises a housing (2) to be mounted in a conduit. The housing (2) has an axial passageway, and a liquid directing member in the form of an insert (7) fills up the passage opening, which insert has at least one helical channel along its circumference. A rotor (3) has a central shaft (5, 6) journalled with limited axial clearance on the downstream side of said insert (7) in a cavity provided for the purpose in the downstream end face of said insert, and in a similar cavity in a counter-bearing (8). The counter-bearing (8) comprises a central portion containing said cavity and is connected through radial sheet members to the wall of said passageway. A device (10, 11) is provided for sensing rotor revolutions and converting these into a signal representation of the fluid flow rate.

An example device includes a first chamber having an inlet and outlet for substantially horizontal fluid flow, a second chamber at least partially openly disposed above the first chamber, and a tube vertically disposed in the second chamber from the second chamber ceiling to the first chamber. When fluid flows from the inlet to the outlet, at least a portion of the fluid flows into the second chamber and air collected at its ceiling moves down the tube and into the first chamber. The ceiling of the second chamber may be contoured such that a first internal height at a first location of the second chamber is greater than a second internal height at a second location, forming a pocket at the ceiling at the first location where air can collect before entering the tube.

The flow restricting device includes a plurality of flexible vanes that combine to define a variable orifice. As the flow of water through the meter increases, the individual flexible vanes move away from each other to expand the size of the flow orifice. The flow restricting device provides a source of back pressure to water flowing through the meter to restrict the flow rate of water and thus protect the metering device contained within the fire hydrant water meter.
