The first pretest of the formation is used to determine an initial estimate of the formation parameters, and pretest criteria for performing a second pretest are designed based on the initial estimate of the formation parameters. The second pretest of the formation is then performed according to the designed pretest criteria, to determine a refined estimate of the formation parameters.

The method comprises capturing wellbore fluid in the formation tester, the wellbore fluid being in fluid communication with a pretest chamber containing a movable piston. The piston is selectively moved in the pretest chamber to alter the volume of captured fluid in the downhole tool, and the pressure of the captured fluid is measured. Mud compressibility is then estimated from the measured pressure.

A method of forming a stator for a positive displacement motor includes forming a liner that includes at least two resilient layers (50) and at least one fiber layer (52), and the at least two resilient layers are positioned so as to enclose the at least one fiber layer. The liner is positioned in a stator tube (82), and the stator tube includes a shaped inner surface (84) including at least two radially inwardly projecting lobes extending helically along a selected length of the stator tube. The liner is cured in the stator tube so that the liner conforms to the radially inwardly projecting lobes formed on the inner surface and to the helical shape of the inner surface. The curing forms a bond between the liner and the inner surface and between the at least two resilient layers and the at least one fiber layer.

An apparatus and method for determining at least one downhole formation property is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pretest piston (118a) positionable in fluid communication with the formation, and a series of flowlines pressure gauges (120a,123a,130a), and valves (121a,124a,128a) configured to selectively draw into the apparatus for measurement of one of formation fluid and mud. The method includes performing a first pretest to determine an estimated formation parameter; using the first pretest to design a second pretest and generate refined formation parameters whereby formation properties may be estimated.
