Les blocs à émettre sur un ou plusieurs canaux physiques de transmission en mode paquets appartiennent à plusieurs flux temporaires de blocs vers des terminaux. Les terminaux sont répartis en plusieurs classes d'abonnement correspondant à différents niveaux de priorité et associées chacune à un paramètre de restriction de débit. On détermine des débits de transmission alloués aux flux en fonction de débits de transmission respectivement demandés lors de la création des flux et des paramètres de restriction associés aux classes d'abonnement. On attribue à chaque nouveau flux créé au moins un canal de trafic supporté par un canal physique. Pour chaque période d'émission sur un canal physique, on sélectionne, à l'aide des valeurs des débits de transmission alloués, un flux auquel est attribué un canal de trafic supporté par ce canal physique, afin d'émettre un bloc du flux sélectionné au cours de ladite période.

A handoff control process in a wireless ATM network replaces a communication connection via old base station with a new communication connection via new base station. In order to guarantee that no data is lost during the reconfigurationj process, an ATM cell level mechanism is used to re-schedule the buffering and transmitting of data streams of the virtual channels (VCs) to be handed-off. In addition, this mechanism is transparent to user applications. The present invention performs three fundamental cell level scheduling functions. The first function is to mark and redirect ATM cell transmission with operation and maintenance (OAM) cells. The second function is to disable and buffer ATM cell transmission until the new path is connected. The third function is to enable ATM cell transmission, starting with the buffered cells across the connected new path.

Distributed routing provides a robust, scalable communication system free of bottlenecks associated with traditional wireless systems. The system (20) includes subscriber units (26) sending and receiving information packets using wireless communication links (28). The system (20) also includes access points (22) with each access point (22) forming a coverage area (24) for exchanging information packets with subscriber units (26) within the coverage area (24). The system (20) further includes distribution points (40) receiving packets from access points (22). Distribution points (40) form a distributed routing network (41). Each distribution point (40) receives an information packet for distribution to a specified destination. If the destination is to a subscriber unit (26) within the coverage area (24) of the access point (22) in communication with the distribution point (40), the information packet is forwarded to the access point (22). Otherwise, the information packet is forwarded to one of the additional distribution points (40).

The invention relates to a method which permits the efficient use of data packets which have different capacities and are transmitted in a communications network. To this end a central unit (ZE) and subscribers (T) can agree to fill transmission frame containers intended for user data packets (LD) with a plurality of control data packets (KD). This permits the efficient transmission of urgent control information, for example during a hand-over in a radio transmission system.
