The present application describes a method to transport a reference clock signal (GPS) from a central office (CO) to a line terminal (LT1) in a communication system wherein the central office (CO) communicates with the line terminal (LT1) in a carrier unit (DLC) via an optical link (PON). The method comprises a) retrieving the reference clock signal (GPS) by the central office (CO);b) synchronizing a first counter into the central office (CO) with the reference clock signal (GPS); c) regularly transferring counter values of the first counter as part of physical layer operation and maintenance (PLOAM) cells over the optical link (PON); d) adjusting a counter value of a second counter of the carrier unit (DLC) when a counter value is received as part of a the physical layer operation and maintenance cell (PLOAM); e) deriving clock signals from the second counter for the line terminal (LT1). Furthermore, the method comprises in order to realize the step c) assigning a predefined value to a predefined message identifier field (MESS-ID) of the physical layer operation and maintenance cell (PLOAM) and comprising the counter values of the first counter in a plurality of predefined message fields (MESS-FLD1, MESS-FLD2, ..., MESS_FLD6) of the physical layer operation and maintenance cell (PLOAM) and being associated to the predefined message identifier field; and in order to realize the step d) recognizing the predefined value of the predefined message identifier field (MESS-ID) and upon a recognition extracting the counter value from the plurality of predefined message fields (MESS-FLD1, MESS-FLD2, ..., MESS-FLD6).

In a single-carrier or multi-carrier modulator (MOD), data symbols are modulated on at least one carrier in accordance with at least one constellation scheme. Idle data symbols are replaced by null data symbols and the latter null data symbols are associated with a low power constellation point of the at least one constellation scheme. The constellation points associated with the data symbols are randomly transformed into constellation points of equal power. In this way, idle data symbols are transferred with minimised power and sufficiently randomised to allow equaliser training and/or tracking at the receiving demodulator (DMOD) and to avoid high crest factors in multi-carrier systems.

The first pilot carrier has an instantaneous frequency that is a fraction of the sample rate of the first transceiver (VDSL_LT) and is orthogonal to other carriers used in the multi-carrier communication system. The second pilot carrier has a mean frequency that is a fraction of the time division duplexing frame rate and is also orthogonal to the other carriers used in the multi-carrier communication system. The present invention relates to a multi-carrier receiver for a multi-carrier system. The receiver comprises means for producing and transmitting bit number information related to the number of bits to be modulated on carriers. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, the means are adapted to produce and transmit bit number information as parameter values for carrier subsets of contiguous carriers, and a single bit number parameter value is useable to determine the number of bits for carriers belonging to the same subset. The present invention also relates to a multi-carrier transmitter for a multi-carrier system.
