Each SBM is located in a bridge node (13, 15) but only one of them which is located in a particular bridge node (15) is the master SBM from which all other SBM's are synchronized, using a synchronous token and/or special synchronization circuitry in each bridge. This allows to have a common period in the whole network for handling synchronous information, even if all rings have different bit rates.

A plurality of station units (18) are coupled remotely throughout the building to the common two wire line (20). The control unit (10) communicates on the digital channel with the plurality of station units (18) in a time frame subdivided into a plurality of time slots. A specified portion of each time slot is reserved for control communication between the control unit (10) and each one of the plurality of station units (18).

Ring communication system (Figure 1) using ISDN including terminal adapter hardware and associated software that can be combined with a general purpose computer and used to provide a work station or party unit which can be linked together with other similarly configured units via the ISDN to provide a closed wide area network. Although the system can be implemented on any type of computer using any programming language, in the preferred embodiment proprietary software designated WinISDN.DLL in a Microsoft Windows® environment is used to implement a novel algorithm in Visual Basic or C-language programming systems. The hardware aspects of the invention are provided in a terminal adapter card (Figure 2) that includes a dual port RAM, and ISDN controller, and a subscriber access controller. The adapter card plugs into the (E)ISA bus that is the PC standard bus/backplane.

In der Vermittlungsanschlußeinrichtung (COT) ist eine ankommende optische Verbindung (RL1) im Sinne des Bildens eines gefalteten Ringnetzes (FRN) auf die weitere, abgehende optische Leitung (RL2) geführt. An die abgesetzten Stationen (RT1...RT3) sind einzelne Kommunikationsendgeräte des Kommunikationsnetzes anschließbar. Mit Hilfe von im Übertragungssystem angeordneten Schaltmitteln (LB1...LB3) und Steuerungen (ZS, ST) kann das gefaltete Ringnetz (FRN) bei Störungen der optischen Leitungen (RL1, RL2) bzw. der übertragungstechnischen Komponenten (OR, OT) aus den noch intakten Ringnetzteilen erneut ein gefaltetes, konfiguriertes Ringnetz gebildet werden. Das Übertragungssystem ist besonders vorteilhaft in weiträumigen Kommunikationsnetzen einsetzbar und kann in Abhängigkeit von der Anzahl der anzuschließenden Kommunikationsendgeräte hinsichtlich der erforderlichen Übertragungssicherheit angepaßt werden.

The present invention relates to a communication system comprising a plurality of communication units (1, 2, 3) which are coupled together by coupling means (4), for example in the form of a physical conductor. Each unit is provided with first means (10) for receiving auditive information and/or second means (11) for transmitting auditive information. Certain units are allotted a group assignment and are arranged to establish a conference call facility, where an analogue signal deriving from transmitted auditive information is subjected to a sampling process. For the purpose of transmitting auditive information and/or for receiving auditive information, all units (1, 2, 3) associated with the group are arranged to utilize one and the same time slot (t3) in a time frame used for the sampling process, such that when information is transmitted simultaneously from two or more units (1, 2) the sampling contributions are summated within time slots (t3) via the unit-interlinking-means (4), so that a plurality of information signals can be evaluated simlutaneously via the first means (10) of the unit (3).
