The invention is characterized in that the control unit (76) predetermines a permissible upper and lower deviation of a reference parameter from a set value from operating parameters of the internal combustion engine (10), using deviation characteristic diagrams (56, 58) and compares said deviations with a differential between a set value and an actual value of the reference parameter, whereby said actual value is determined from parameters of the volumetric flow of the coolant, optionally with the help of characteristic diagrams (42, 46, 74).

A diagnostic method is also disclosed which includes confirming using data provided by the sensor (48) that the identifier device (39) is properly coupled to the component (16).
