A device to compact parts out of powder material including a top die and a bottom die movable with respect to each other from an open position to a closed position, at least one punch associated with each of said dies for relative movement between the die and associated punch, said bottom die and bottom punch movable to positions defining a cavity substantially within said top die for receiving powder therein, said bottom punch and said top and bottom dies being relatively movable to draw powder down into a portion of said cavity adjacent the bottom die that is formed due to said relative movement, said top and bottom punches being movable toward each other to compact the powder and form the part, said top and bottom dies being separable to eject the part. Relative movement of the top and bottom die and bottom punch may take place during filling of the cavity with powder. Alternatively, relative movement may take place after the completion of filling the cavity adjacent the top die with sufficient powder to fill the part.

A disposable plunger for use in a pressing furnace for the fabrication of dental restorations. The plunger is fabricated of a partially sintered ceramic material. The plunger is fabricated by known casting methods. The mold used for making the plunger can be supplied by a manufacturer of molds or can be easily made by using an alumina or similar plunger as a model. Laborious cleaning and grinding are not required with plungers herein described. Cracking problems that occur with prior art plungers are decreased, if not completely eliminated.

A method and apparatus for the cross-hole pressing of cutting inserts (10) is disclosed whereby a green part (110) is fabricated using metallurgical powder (260) and an opening (25) is imparted within the green part by placing the metallurgical powder about an oval-shaped core rod (235). Using a press (200) with a uni-axial press motion, a core rod is placed within the cavity (210) of a mold and metallurgical powder placed around the core rod and thereafter compressed to form a green part. The subject invention is also directed to an article formed utilizing such a process and the uni-axial press used to produce such an insert.

This invention includes a transferable metal die unit (7) including a die having a cavity of a desired cross-sectional shape in which magnet molding material powder is filled, the cavity extending in groovelike form in a specific direction on a surface of the die, a lid member placed to cover the cavity, and a pair of punches having the same cross-sectional shape as the cavity,'the punches being capable of fitting in the cavity from both ends thereof and made slidable in directions in which the punches go into contact with and become separated from the magnet molding material powder, pressurizing means (17, 18) for holding the metal die unit (7) which has been transferred with the magnet molding material powder filled in the cavity and for pressurizing the magnet molding material powder by driving the two punches such that the punches slide in their approaching directions, and magnetic field generating means (21, 22) for magnetizing the pressurized magnet molding material powder while applying a magnetic field thereto in a direction perpendicular to a direction of pressurization.

When producing a sinterable ceramic or metallic body (15), a tool is used which can be assembled from two or more tool parts (19, 24). A moulding space (F) corresponds to the shape of the body. One tool part (24) is produced using a wet composition which comprises solvent, heat-conducting particles and material which is readily worked and form-stable in solidified form, for example plaster. The material is caused to solidify in a binding function in which the solvent is eliminated and pores thereby arise in the solidified material. The injection moulding composition is injected into the space (F) using a low or medium compression moulding pressure and heat which arises due to the injection into the space is conducted away by means of the said heat-conducting particles in the solidified material. Any gas or air which is trapped in the space is conducted away through the pores in the solidified material.
