The invention relates to a method for improving the separation of water in a tall oil preparation process which comprises: a neutralization step, in which a mixture of tall oil soap and water is neutralized with carbon dioxide; a water separation step, in which the aqeuous phase containing bicarbonate is separated from the tall oil soap; and a cooking step, in which the tall oil soap obtained from the previous step is cooked with sulfuric acid in order to form tall oil, the improvement comprising the fact that, after the neutralization with carbon dioxide but before the water separation step, the pH is adjusted with an acidically reacting substance, such as bisulfite. The invention also relates to a method for the preparation of tall oil, the method comprising the steps stated above.

The specification discloses a process for making high viscosity gelled ink resins which exhibit improved properties. In a preferred embodiment, a precursor resin is conducted through an extruder with a cross-linking agent, preferably a heat reactive phenolic resin, to induce formation of covalent cross-link bonds in the resin producing a high viscosity resin which resists viscosity breakdown under high shear conditions. The resulting gelled ink resins may be used directly in making ink, obviating the need for further gelation and avoiding the use of conventional organo-metallic gelling agents.

The invention provides rosin ester and colorless rosin remarkably improved in the characteristics such as color tone, odor and stability as compared with the conventional products.

A process for the production of a stabilized rosin and a stabilized rosin obtainable by the process. According to the process rosin is heated in the presence of a phosphoric acid or a strong acid in combination with a phosphate containing substance and disproportionated by addition of iodine. Preferably the rosin is first heated in the presence of the phosphoric acid or the strong acid in combination with the phosphate containing substance and thereafter disproportionated by the addition of iodine. Iodine is preferably added in at least two steps and the disproportionation is allowed to proceed between each step. The stabilized rosin can be used as a tackifier resin in adhesives and as a sizing agent for paper, paper boards and similar products.
