A system and method for manually removably locking a paper handling (20) module to a reproduction apparatus (10) with greatly reduced manual force, wherein the reproduction apparatus and the paper handling module have respective sheet feed openings which are operatively aligned for sheet feeding therebetween when the module (20) is so locked to the reproduction apparatus in a locking position, and wherein the paper handling module has a weight which is undesirable for manual lifting into the locking position. The module (20) is supported on an integral module transporting system (26-33) to be freely movable in any horizontal direction into an initial docking position closely adjacent to the reproduction apparatus (10). Then, slightly vertically lifting at least one side of the module (20) with only a small vertical manual lifting force while most of the weight of the module is lifted with an automatic weight lifting system (34, 35), moving the module towards the locking position, and then removing the small vertical manual lifting force from the module, to drop and lock the module to the reproduction apparatus (10). The automatic weight lifting may be provided by vertically movably spring (34) loading at least one side of the module on the module transporting system (26-33).

A novel form and method for creating and using document sized file storage sheets (10) containing one or more files (16-22), employing a user model similar to that of a floppy disk. A storage sheet comprises at least one sheet (10) of an information storing substrate material, commonly paper. A system (30; Fig.2) for the inputting and processing of storage sheet images is also disclosed. The storage sheet (10) comprises a machine readable mark, a "file storage sheet flag", (12) which alerts the system is currently reading a file storage sheet (10). Upon image input, this flag (12) is deliberately scanned for by the system. The storage sheet (10) also comprises a machine readable directory (14) that informs the system about the general characteristics of the files (16-22) stored on the sheet (10). Such general information may include the name of the files (16-22), the number of bytes, creation date, owner, the location of the first byte of the file (16-22) on the sheet, and the like. If the current file storage sheet (10) comprises more than one sheet, then the directory (14) may inform the system (30; Fig.2) where the files (16-22) are located among the separate sheets. A file storage sheet may optionally comprises a human readable label (13) and a human readable directory.

A system and process prints a high resolution image on a high addressable image output terminal by converting an image at one resolution to an image having a lower resolution in a fast-scan direction and a higher resolution in a pixel depth direction. The converted image is then processed and binarized prior to being printed on a high addressable printer. The system or process utilizes a conversion circuit which includes a two-bit per pixel packing circuit, a scanline buffer circuit, a logic circuit, and a look-up table. The conversion circuit initially converts the image into an image having a lower resolution in the fast-scan direction and a higher pixel depth resolution. Thereafter, the image is further converted to an image having a lower resolution in the slow-scan direction and a higher pixel depth resolution. This conversion of a high resolution image to a lower resolution is carried without any substantial lost to the image content data.

The amount of bitmapped image data, also known as video data, is reduced by one half or more and prior to being sent to the printhead for printing checkerboard patterns. Reduction of the bitmapped image data is accomplished by a data packer circuit 56 which selects certain bits of the bitmapped image data for printing by the printhead in a checkerboard pattern. At the printhead, the bitmapped image is reconstructed by a data unpacker circuit 58 to cause selective ejection of ink from the appropriate nozzles of the printhead.
