Abstract:
There is described herein a mutant plant or part thereof having at least partially reduced expression or activity of at least two heavy metal ATPases (HMAs), said two HMAs comprising, consisting or consisting essentially of : (i) polypeptides having at least 65% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:1 and SEQ ID NO:2; (ii) polynucleotides encoding the polypeptides set forth in (i); or (iii) polynucleotides having at least 65% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:3 and SEQ ID NO:4 encoding HMAs; wherein the expression or activity of one of the HMAs set forth in (i) or (ii) or (iii) is partially reduced or lost and the expression or activity of one of the HMAs set forth in (i) or (ii) or (iii) is lost as compared to a control plant; and wherein the mutant plant or part thereof exhibits at least a 27% reduction, as compared to the control plant, in the accumulation of cadmium in leaf when the mutant plant is grown in the field in the presence of naturally or non-naturally occurring cadmium.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses genetically modified tobacco plants, and tobacco products derived from such plants, comprising a decrease in at least one amino acid such that upon heating and/or burning, the tobacco plant or a portion thereof generates reduced levels of a compound derived from the at least one amino acid as compared to an unmodified parent tobacco plant or a portion thereof. In an embodiment, the tobacco generates reduced levels of acrylamide and/or acrylonitrile upon heating and/or burning of the tobacco as compared to an unmodified parent tobacco line. These plants are useful for improving tobacco products.
Abstract:
A method for preparing a flavor-containing sheet for a smoking article, characterized by comprising a step of extending a raw material slurry on a substrate, wherein the slurry contains polysaccharide consisting of gellan gum and tamarind gum, a flavor, an emulsifier and 70 to 95 wt% of water, has a weight ratio of gellan gum to tamarind gum of 1:1 to 3:1, and has a temperature of 60 to 90°C in a sol state, a step of cooling the extended raw material slurry to a sample temperature of 0 to 40°C to form a gel, and a heat-drying step comprising heating the gelled raw material and drying it at a sample temperature of 70 to 100°C.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a thermoreversible composition for smoking goods that are gel-like at normal temperatures, comprising glycerin at 69.0-94.8 wt% with respect to the entirety of the composition, native-type gellan gum at 0.2-1.0 wt% with respect to the entirety of the composition, and water at 5.0-30.0 wt%.
Abstract:
A cartomizer for an electronic smoking article, an electronic smoking article capable of providing a smoking experience without combusting tobacco, and a method of achieving a smoking experience without combusting tobacco are disclosed. The cartomizer can include an annular fluid reservoir having an air flow channel therein; a liquid material within the fluid reservoir; and a heater, which surrounds the fluid reservoir and is operable to heat the fluid reservoir to a temperature sufficient to at least initially volatilize the liquid material contained within the fluid reservoir to form a saturated vapor within the air flow channel.
Abstract:
A method of reducing the amount of matrix-bound NNK in cured tobacco plant material is provided comprising reducing the amount of lignin in the cured tobacco plant material. A further method of reducing the formation of matrix-bound NNK during the curing of tobacco plant material is described comprising reducing the amount of lignin therein prior to curing.
Abstract:
Methods of preparing highly purified steviol glycosides, particularly rebaudiosides A, D and M are described. The methods include utilizing recombinant microorganisms for converting various staring compositions to target steviol glycosides. In addition, novel steviol glycosides reb D2 and reb M2 are disclosed, as are methods of preparing the same. The highly purified rebaudiosides are useful as non-caloric sweetener in edible and chewable compositions such as any beverages, confectioneries, bakery products, cookies, and chewing gums.

Abstract:
A smoking article formed from a tobacco material that includes tobacco non-isometric precipitated calcium carbonate microparticles is provided. The non-isometric microparticles typically have a mean diameter of from about 50 nanometers to about 3 micrometers, in some embodiments from about 80 nanometers to about 1 micrometer, in some embodiments from about 100 nanometers to about 400 nanometers, and in some embodiments, from about 200 nanometers to about 300 nanometers. Such non-isometric particles may have an elongated morphology so that the length of the microparticles is greater than the diameter. This may be characterized by the “aspect ratio” of the microparticles (length divided by width), which is typically from about 1 to about 15, in some embodiments from about 2 to about 12, and in some embodiments, from about 3 to about 10. For example, the average length of the microparticles may range from about 100 nanometers to about 8 micrometers, in some embodiments from about 300 nanometers to about 5 micrometers, in some embodiments from about 500 nanometers to about 4 micrometers, and in some embodiments, from about 1 micrometer to about 3 micrometers.
