The invention relates to labelling apparatus used for applying labels to containers, including bottles for containing beverages. The invention finds a particular application in role feed labelling machines and the manner in which lables are tensioned as they are applied to respective containers. A problem which is faced in designing and utilizing such apparatus occurs in the actual application of each label to its respective container. When the label leaves the vacuum drum a pulling force must be maintained on the label to give a satisfactory label wrap onto the container. It is also preferable if this pulling force can be controlled or regulated. If the pulling force is insufficient, a label may wrinkle. Conversely, if the pulling force is too great, the label may be caused to stretch or tear or alternatively the front edge of the label which is first applied to the container may slip or detach from the container. According to the present invention there is provided an applicator pad (9) used for labelling apparatus for providing a pulling force on a label (4) as it is wrapped around a respective container (2), the applicator pad characterised by providing the pulling force using the venturi principle.
