The present invention relates to a method of detecting a predetermined condition in a gas turbine (10) and to a failure detection system for a gas turbine (10). The invention analyses instantaneous temperature readings from different locations (42, 32) in or outside/downstream a combustion system (22) of the gas turbine (10) by calculating the variance (130) for each measurement location (42, 32) during a predetermined time period. The variance of one measurement location is selected and than compared with a threshold that is based on at least two of the other variances of the other measurement locations (140, 150). If the said one selected variance goes above the threshold the occurrence of the predetermined condition is detected (170, 180).

A method of managing transient events regularly seen during gas turbine (10) operation that may cause undesirable operation and hardware damage. During certain transient operations, a lag may be seen between reference exhaust temperature and actual turbine exhaust temperature. This lag can result in an under-fired condition within the combustion system of variable magnitude and duration. Either fuel split schedules or a control algorithm can be positioned during these transients to prevent combustion dynamics or loss of flame. Once the transient has completed, normal control operation is resumed.

Systems and methods for improving the efficiency of a power generation facility utilize heat energy to preheat inlet-air that is supplied to the compressor of a turbine or to preheat fuel that is burned in the turbine. The heat energy used to preheat the inlet-air can be drawn from a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) that produces steam using at least part of the exhaust gas of the turbine. The heat energy can be obtained from one or more predetermined points within the HRSG, such as a feed water line exiting a drum of the HRSG or a feed line connecting an economizer of the HRSG to a drum of the HRSG. The fluid drawn from the predetermined point passes through a heat exchanger or a preheater to remove the heat energy used for preheating. The fluid is then returned to the HRSG immediately downstream from the point from which it was drawn.
