The present invention relates to an electromechanical brake (10) characterized in that a brake pad (14) is pressed against the brake disc by an electric motor mounted on a roll threaded driving mechanism (18). In order to loosen the brake (10) in the case of a malfunction, the invention suggests that the nut (20) be supported by a roll threaded driving member (18) in the axial direction through an anti-self-locking shaft (42) designed anti-rotational due to a permanent magnet brake (48) which can be loosened by submitting it to an electric flow. Upon loosening the brake (48) the brake pad pressed against the disc (16) sets in rotation the shaft (42) serving as a support and presses the whole roll threaded driving mechanism (18) off the disc, thereby causing the brake to be loosened (10).

A brake element reliable in operation, very resistant to thermal stresses and mechanically stable has a brake ring (1) or brake drum body in interaction with brake jaws made of a cast iron material with a high resistance to thermal shocks and a hub (2) and flange made of a cast iron with a higher grade tensile strength. The hub (2) is united to the brake ring (1) or brake drum by composite casting, forming a material union (5). The invention concerns in particular brake drums, brake disks or the like for vehicles.

This invention effectively reduces the screeching (unpleasant sound) of a brake occurring when an automobile is braked. A rod is set up on the inner surface of a rim to which a brake lining is attached, and a weight is fixed to this rod via an elastic member. Since a weight is fixed to a brake shoe via an elastic member, the weight receives the vibration of the brake shoe and is vibrated. The vibration of the weight has a low frequency and a phase equal to that of the vibration of the brake shoe. However, as the vibration frequency of the brake shoe increases, the vibration phase of the weight deviates from that of the brake shoe. At a frequency in the vicinity of a certain level and not lower than the same, a phase difference becomes substantially 180 DEG . If this frequency is set in agreement with that of a screeching sound of the brake, the vibration of the brake shoe can be suppressed by that of the weight. It is possible to reduce the screeching sound of a brake of a large-sized vehicle, in which the size of a brake shoe is large, to a practically sufficient level by merely adding an inexpensive part to the brake, and maintain the original performance of the brake even when the brake lining is replaced.

A vibration damping mechanism for use in a disc brake which can effectively suppress squeaks of the disc brake during braking. Vibrations of the rotor (1) are detected by a piezoelectric element (7-1) pressed against the back of the inner pad (2a). The detection signal is inputted in a control circuit (9). The control circuit (9) applies a control signal to another piezoelectric element (7-2) to produce oscillations having such a frequency that they can reduce the detection signal to zero. The oscillations produced by the piezoelectric element (7-2) are transmitted to the rotor (1) to cancel its vibrations. With this arrangement, signal components other than the rotor vibrations are scarcely contained in the detection signal, so that it is possible to produce oscillations that can cancel vibrations of the rotor (1) with high accuracy. As a result, the rotor vibrations and thus squeaks of the disc brake are effectively suppressed.
