Such flexible sheathing may be arranged in a retracted condition wherein the piston is completely accommodated within the cylinder and in an extended condition wherein the piston is completely extracted from a caliper body defining the cylinder, said piston having a piston outer surface suitable to co-operate with a cylinder inner surface of the caliper body which accommodates the piston, said outer surface having a predefined piston diameter and said cylinder inner surface having a predefined cylinder diameter, wherein said piston comprises a piston body and a head thereof suitable to press against a pad of the disc brake. Such sheathing may include a sheathing body, which in the retracted condition, of a disc-shaped configuration which develops from an inner diameter to an outer diameter; said outer diameter being greater than said cylinder diameter; said inner diameter being lower than the piston diameter and defining a sheathing portion developing from said inner diameter to said piston diameter; a first hooking ring being arranged along the sheathing outer diameter suitable to be fixed to a caliper body; a second hooking ring being arranged along the inner diameter of the sheathing suitable to be fixed to a piston; a plurality of folds consisting of folds that consist of portions of said sheathing body which are folded such as to have the surfaces thereof directly facing each other and such as to allow the extension of the sheathing during the outward movement of the piston from the cylinder of the caliper body; wherein the plurality of folds is totally arranged on said sheathing portion which extends from the inner diameter to the piston diameter. A brake element reliable in operation, very resistant to thermal stresses and mechanically stable has a brake ring (1) or brake drum body in interaction with brake jaws made of a cast iron material with a high resistance to thermal shocks and a hub (2) and flange made of a cast iron with a higher grade tensile strength. The hub (2) is united to the brake ring (1) or brake drum by composite casting, forming a material union (5). The invention concerns in particular brake drums, brake disks or the like for vehicles.

An electrically actuated braking system (30) of the type having a plurality of brake actuators (35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49) disposed on a carrier housing (13) to selectively apply a braking force to effect the restraint of wheel rotation has the particular actuators employed during a braking event determined, at least in part, by monitored wheel motion. The system (30) reduces brake energy consumption and heat generation during slow speed operations, reduces braking induced vibration, and compensates for individual actuator failure. The system (30) includes a first circuit for energizing only a first proper subset of the plurality of the brake actuators (35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49) upon occurrence of a braking command (59); a second circuit for energizing only a second proper subset of the plurality of brake actuators upon occurrence of a braking command; and wheel motion monitors (51, 53) providing control signals for selectively enabling the first circuit and not the second circuit in response to certain of the control signals, the second circuit and not the first circuit in response to other of the control signals, and both the first and second circuits in response to still other of the control signals. Typically, there are four disjoint proper subsets the union of which comprises all actuators for the given brake. Preferably the first and second circuits each energize axactly one brake actuator. In one form, the first and second circuits are both energized during normal braking while the first, but not the second, is energized during slow speed taxi or towing operation. In another form, the first subset comprises all properly operating brake actuators while the second comprises all malfunctioning brake actuators and the second circuit remains un-energized.
