An infrared sensor using the liquid crystal chopper(4) in the above construction as a chopper mechanism to intermittently interrupt infrared rays incident upon the pyroelectric element (2). The infrared sensor has a short response time at the liquid crystal chopper and consumes less power.

A temperature monitoring system includes a linear array of six pyroelectric sensors (22) mounted in a block (18). A through hole (20) is provided in the block (18) for each sensor (22). A bore in the block having an axis which intersects the axis of each through hole (20) accommodates a rotary shaft (26). The shaft (26) is provided with a diametrically extending bore (28) for each through hole (20). Thus rotation of the shaft (26) alternately exposes each sensor (18) to the shaft (26) itself and to an object in the line of sight of each sensor(22) as defined by its corresponding throughhole (20). The output signal from each sensor (22) is differentiated and used to provide a temperature measurement. The output signal is corrected for any drift in the temperature of the shaft (26) or block (18). This is effected by periodically bringing a heated calibration head (36) operating at a known temperature into the line of sight of each sensor (22).

The scene 5 is imaged in thermal radiation 2, 3 upon a pair of adjacent pyroelectric radiation detectors 9, 10. The scene radiation is chopped (14) and the difference in detector outputs displayed (22) to the observer while the field of view of the detectors, aligned with a visual aiming sight, is trasversed across the object. The location and sign of a temperature discontinuity in the visual scene may for example enable the observer to measure the silo contents.

A system and method for generating signals representing infrared radiation include the capability to provide a reference scene (1008) and an actual scene (1016) to a plurality of infrared detector elements arranged in a two-dimensional array, the detector elements being biased so that they produce a signal even when no infrared radiation is impinging thereon (1004). The system and method further include the capability to receive a first signal representing the reference scene from one of the detector elements (1012), receive a second signal representing the actual scene from the detector element, and remove the bias signal from the second signal (1020). The system and method also include the capability to attenuate the remaining second signal (1024), integrate the attenuated signal (1028), and sample the integrated signal (1032).
