A metal can end (10) has a metal pull tab (16) attached to a score-defined detachable portion (15) of the can end by direct welding of protective polymer coatings (19,20) whose surfaces at least are derived from the same monomer and which are provided on the upper side of the can end and the under side of a shank portion (18) of the pull tab. The coatings may be composite films each comprising an inner layer of a bonding resin and an outer layer of a polyolefin, polyamide or polyester. The welding may be effected by heat or preferably by ultrasonic energy.

A printing apparatus for printing a pattern on an endless side wall of a container component comprises six handling mechanisms 13 mounted on an indexing table 11, four printing heads 10 located at spaced apart positions on the indexing table 11, and a carrier 12 associated with each handling mechanism and arranged to carry a container 1 on which a pattern is to be printed. Each handling mechanism 13 comprises an outer roller 26 driven by a motor 20 and an inner roller 32. Each carrier 12 has an endless wall part 35 having a profile which matches that of the side wall of the container and a support part 38,39 for holding a container 1 on which a pattern is to be printed. The endless wall part is held in the nip between rollers 26,32. A sensor 41 and an encoder 45 are provided for detecting the position of carrier 12. During operation, the endless wall part 35 is driven between rollers 26,32, thus causing the side wall of the container to pass in front of a printing head 10 with a constant clearance therebetween. The printing head 10 is operated so as to print a pattern in a desired position. An alternative arrangement is described for the handling mechanism 13 and the carrier 12.

A method and apparatus for sealing cartons (11) by sticking together facing surfaces of a hinged flap (14) and a wall (17) of each carton by means of a solvent-based, preferably water-based, adhesive, in which the cartons are continuously moved along a line (10) past an adhesive applicator (18) which applies a deposit (20) of adhesive to the under surface of the flap (14), first pressure rollers (21) arranged to bring the flap surface temporarily into contact with the side wall (17) to transfer some of the adhesive (20) to it and to thin out and spread the adhesive on the flap (14), a hot air nozzle (24) which enters within the acute angle formed between the two surfaces when the flap (14) is released from the first pressure rollers (21) and which directs hot air onto the surfaces to effect partial drying of the adhesive, and a second set of pressure rollers (26,27) to press the flap (14) against the side wall (17) to effect final sealing.
