The color code is printed by a color printer (FIG.2, item 40) using single intensity colors in specific shapes (FIG. 1, items 12-27) aligned side by side successively. The code is predetermined. The code can be read by a video device (FIG. 2, item 41) and decoded by a computer (FIG. 2, item 42). The present invention allows for densely packed encoded information in a small space that can be cheaply and easily read and decoded.

There is provided a latent image carrier from which data can be reliably read for a long time. It includes a data storage layer (2) having a latent image pattern formed of fine phosphor paticles dispersed and held on a substrate (4a). When the layer (2) is irradiated with light having a predetermined wavelength, the luminescence from the fine phosphor particles is read as optical information. When irradiated with such light, the surface of the substrate (4a) has a reflectivity of at least 20 %. The data storage layer (2) has a thickness T of 0.5 to 20 νm above the upper surface of the substrate (4a), and a protective sheet (6a) is laminated on the substrate (4a) to cover the data storage layer (2) as a whole.

The user operates a computer (16) to generate a serial number which is repeated a plurality of times to form an indicia as an optical display (17). The film is developed and cut into a plurality of tag particles with each tag particle having at least one complete serial number thereon. The present invention is addressed to providing a simple method for labeling an object for its verification. The method of the present invention for labeling an object for its verification commences with applying to a location on said object a mark which creates a permanent impression thereof which is perceptible to the unaided eye and a mark which creates a permanent impression thereof which is imperceptible to the unaided eye, yet which can be determined by mechanical, electrical, and/or biologic means. In prior art a combination of UV dye and amino acid/protein fragment was used to label objects for their identification. The present invention broadens such dual labeled scheme to include a variety of additional 'invisible' labeling techniques. Additionally, the present invention includes the recognition that, in order to stop counterfeiting of records and like consumer goods, a visible mark also must be present on the object. A hologram or other visible indicia would provide the owner (and the copyist) with one level of protection in ascertaining the genuiness of the object. The second means is 'invisible' to the owner (and the copyist) and is designed to be difficult (if not impossible) for the copyist to duplicate.

The present invention embeds information in each copy of a document (1207, 1407) such that a particular copy of the document is distinguishable from all other copies of the same document. Additionally, this embedded information (1209, 1301, 1409) is designed to remain intact even if the original is copied. A method and apparatus is also disclosed to embed verification information in a printed document (1207, 1407) such that modification to the text subsequent to printing is detectable.

This application relates to a document authentication concept wherein a transparent tape (34) having encoded text (36) thereon is applied to the document (10). The encoded text (36) printed on the transparent tape (34) is printed with invisible ink so that the message thereon is not visible to the unaided eye. Preferably, the ink is visible in the infrared range. With such a combination, the authentication medium can be applied to a document (10) that has a predetermined format so that the tape (34) can be placed over a portion of the text and the latter will still be readable.
